tho California, which was opened up
last fall, where I am told 9300 was
pounded out In a sluglo day some
tlmo ago, and about two weeks ago

produced 91,800. Tho. run was

"At Durkco I saw four largo;
parties of capitalists going out to
look at various proportion iu tho
district. Tho placers at Ryo Valloy
and at several points in tho Raslu
are being activoly oporated, and
there is a general look of prosperity
throughout this reglou.
"A quartz mill is being built four
miles northwest of the -Basin, and
preparations are being made to start
work on numerous propects.
"Tho California property owned
by Portland people has beeu in
corporated, and work will be resumed
there within the next thirty days.
This Is situated about one mile
from the Morning Star, at the bad of
California Gulch.
"There is another property ou the
Baker City side of the summit, near
Tho wator ouciuutorod in sinking
will not probably tax tho pump to its
full capacity, but tho object of tho
company is to bo proparod iu caso
of an emorgoucy.
Tho shaft, it has beeu statod, is
now down about 100 feot, aud
Superlntondout Reed is confident
that he will eucouutor bod rock within
the next fifty feet. The now hoisting
machinery, howovor, recently in
stalled at tho placers, has a capacity
of &00 feet depth.
