Miss Jessie Brook is homo for tho summer vacation, returning from Baker City yesterday. J.R. Noill, of the Noill Mercantile company, returned Sunday from a visit to Walla Walla. Fred Smith, manager of he Snow Creek, left Saturday for tho property to be gone several days. . C Norris, of Kearney,, Nobrnka, brotbor-in-law of L. M. Welsh, is in the city to spend the summer P. A. McPhee, mayor of Alamo City, who has beeen spending soveral days here, returned today. A. J. Trimble expects to leave at an early date for Alaska, to look after his extensive interests thore. Mrs. J. L. Hazelwood and Mrs. A. C. Greenleo, loft this weok for a visit of several days to La Urande. Lou Walker and Captain C. S. Miller returned last weok from a prospecting trip to the John Day country. Cbarlos Parker, suporlntoudont and mauaging owuor of tho Plioouix, spent a few days in tho city last week. Miss Carmino Stoddard reached home yesterday from Logan, Utah, where she has boon at school during tho session just closed. Mr. and Mrs. D. W. Baird returned this week from Ogden, Utah, whero they attended the diamond wedding of Mr. Baird 's grand parents. Mrs. E. L. Manning, who has been sponding some tlmo in Spokane, roturned homo- today. Mr. Manning wont to Baker City yesterday to moot her. Colonol Emmett Callahan, of Baker City, was horo last weok to attend a directors' mooting of tho Byson Gold Mining and Milling company. II. W. Donahue has takon dosk room with Manning & Welsh and will do stenographic and typo wrltiug work for the public, in which ho is an acknowledged export. Senator W. II. Hobsou, of tho Ilobson Morcantilo company, loft this weok for Salem to bo gouo about a month. Ho will bo prosout at tho oosovlt rocoption at Portlaud. Dr. Voso has at bis olllco au electrical apparatus for examining hiddon parts of the human body by tho aid of magnifying glasses and eloctrlo lights that is a triumph of mechanical skill. L. M. Baker returned Sunday from Slem, where he spent tho wiuotr. Ho will soou begin work again on his mining property north of town, where he has worked unaided for three seasons past. Prof. J. J. Liddy, of Baker City, was In Sumpter a few days since, visiting bis friend, Ed Butze, Sr. This is bis first visit hero in three years and, of course, was astonlshod at the growth of this camp. President E. Sanderson Smith, of the Magnolia, was out at tho mine Saturday. Ho brought buck with him a couple of hundrdo puonds of ore for a final test treatment by a process which will probably bo adopted. Judge Reed, of tho post office department, who has beeu in Baker City selecting a site for tho federal building to bo ercted thore, spent Saturday in Sumpter with his old f riond A. , P. Uoss.
