THE SUMPTER MINER
OLD PROPERTY
TO BE WORKED.
MINNIE M'DOWELL TO START
UP SOON.
Owners Getting la Shape to Begin Oper
ationsMine in Early Days Carried
Ore out on Mules to McEwen Vast
Deposit of Rich Stuff.
It ia understood through roltnblo
sources that work ou au oxtousivo
scale ia to be started on tbo Miuuio
McDowell property 111 tbo Cable
Cove dtatrlot this aumnior. Tbo
Miuuio McDowell la among tbo
mines which govo tbo early promiao of
becoming n big producer, but which lu
later years with the exception of
tho annual assessment work haa been
practically abandoned, tho owners
scattering one place aud another,
several of tbcm engnglug iu other
mining enterprises. Tho fact haa not
been loat sight of, boworer, that tbo
Miuuio McDowell furnished a high
grado of shipping oro which it paid
to carry out ou mules to McEwen
whou tho railroad stopped there aud
boforo it was oxtouded to Sumpter.
Iu tboao days tho rich deposits of
gold hero had attracted comparatively
but little attention aud tho ownors
of tbo Miuuio McDowoll carried ou
operations in a very desultory sort
of faahiou, gottlug out oro ouly
lutormlttoutly whou thoy stood in
need of funds.
Tho rlchuosa of the oro haa boon
fully demonstrated, however, assays
having run aa high aa 8300, and It ia
said to exist in large quantities.
Tbo owners realizing the magnitude
of their proposition bavo kept up
tholr assessment work until such a
timo aa they woro prepared to go
ahead with operations on a more
extenaive scale. It is reliably stated
now that tho owners of this proporty
aro in a position to inaugurate
operations and will do so at an oarly
dato.
It is said that tho Miuuio McDow
ell ore is among tho fluost shlppiug
ores of tho district. So perfectly aro
the olementa bloudod that it Muxes
almost without any additions. With
the establishment of a road to the
district, which it is understood will
be done this summor, tho company
will Hud a ready market for tho
output of its mlno practically at its
door.
FINE SMELTING ORE
AT STORM KING.
President Costello Says Group
Has Father of Lode
Family.
T. J. Costello, president of tho
Foreat Mining compauy, operating
the Storm King group in tho Cable
Cove district, returned from a visit
to the property last week. Tho
compauy ia sinking ou the Eureka
claim and will continue to do so
until the water makes operations at
this point impossible, and theu tho
ledge will be crosscut. Prosidout
Costello baa found it uoceessary to
Increase his force of mou iu order
to keep tbo water out of tho way.
Tho oro is steadily increasing iu
quality as greater depth is attained.
Larger bodies aud hotter oro aro
showing up. President Costello
says that if tbo North Polo contains
tho mothor lode, tbo Storm King
cau certainly claim tbo distinction
of bavlug tbo paternal aucestor of
tbo eutiro Lodo family. Tho shafting
now being douo ou tbo hanging wall
showa a mighty high quality of
smeltiug ore, aud values aro rapidly
increasing with depth. Tbo northeast
end lines of tbo Storm King join
tho southwest oud lines of tho Miuuio
McDowell which la mentioned
elaewhore in this Issue, aud tho
proporty contains a continuation of (
tbo same ledge. Tbo oro baa suporlor
smelting qualities aud will llux 1
almost without auy additions. j
A wagon road ia to bo built to tho
proporty this summer which will
greatly lmprovo transportation
facilities aud increase ita valuo.
Owing to tho backwardness of tbo '
spring aud tho largo amouut of snow I
yet lu tho district Ibis work has been!
dolaycd, but it will bo prosocutod i
aa soon as tbo weather gets bettor. .
Tho company will do a largo amount
of work tills summor demonstrating
its oro bodies aud getting lu a
posltiou to ship whou conditions
warrant. Other claims aro also to bo
dovolopdd.
