w Wednesday, April 15, 10,03 THE SUMP1ER MINER K MINING INVESTMENTS. Prejudice Against Them Gradually Dying Out. Tho Prescott, Arizona, correspond ent to tho Amoricau Mining News, makes tbo following pertiuont re marks regarding miuiug as a field for Investors; , To a student of financial affairs the present outlook' of 'the financial world Is au interesting enigma. Possibly I am too prejudiced in favor of tho mining Industry asli Hold lor investment to bo ablo to judge Impar tially of the merit of other invest ments. Rut why so much money is eagerly invested iu tho different so- called "conservative" investments In proferouco to other propositions which pay a much larger rato of in terest and aro, comparatively speak ing, equally as safe, is not easily understood. Tuko, for instauco, tho railroads of tho United States. There lias been a shrinkage of millions of dollars in this class of securities during tho past year, yet railroad stock is more readily bought by tho public than almost any othor class of security. Why this should bo is a puzzle, for tho interest returned by them is la moutably small, particularly if tho soiling prices of tho stocks aro above pur, us a majority of thorn are. According to a mining man's etuudard of comparrlson, it is a do oidodly illogical coudltiou of ulfulrs to find tho price of railroad stock bid up to almost twlco its par valuo bo causo It pays 4 or 5 por cent in terest, whon ou all sides cau bo found muinlg propositions, almost begging for a salo at tholr par valuo, that aro just as socuro and which cau and do pay au iutorost of many times 5 por cent. Naturally it will bo Bald that tbo risks and uncertainties of miuiug aro infinitely groator than those of railroads or the industrial securities. But this a mining man will deny and ho has vory strong reasons to support his stand. In proportion to tholr number there are more railroads In tbo coun try that do not return a cont of In terest to their stockholders than there aro mines. Tho only real valuo that they bavo is of furnishing an avenue for speculation for thoso who llvo by this moans. Hut for real out-and-out morlt it will bo fouud thut for ovory railroad of valuo thoro is a mining company which is paying four times as much interest and whoso stock is ou a much moro solid basis of valuo. It is understood, of courso, thut, whon I rofor to mining, it is ou tho Icgitimuto proposition and not ou tho "wildcat" thut my comparisons aro mudo. It is not justifiable to put all mining propositions in tho failure class bocuiino of tho failure of a fow, any moro than it would bo justifiable to brand all railroad cor porations as failures becauso of tho inability of some to mako mouoy. Unfortunately, it is a trait of tho human uaturo to accopt a great deal for granted. This trait has boon and always will bo tbo causo of great loss to investors. Mining is beginning to be looked upon with favorable eyes becauso its merits aud value have become so prominent that it canuot bo longer overlooked by those who havo money to invest, but it will be many years before the prejudice engendered by the swindling propositions with which tho public havo been bitten is en tirely removed. Iu tho meantime it will coutluuo to mako mouoy for thoso who have faith in it, besides building up incontrovertible proofs , of its superiority ovor ull othor clnssos I of securities for ull classes of inves tors. Muuy pooplo object to investing in' mining stock becauso it is not usually listed aud it may tuko time to resell, whereas railroad securities have a ready market. This is quito true; but thoro aro many othor things to bo considered. s Any.stock that is listed runs tho chuueo of falling into tho bunds of manipulators. When this occurs, the- principal factor in favor of miu iug is wiped out, aud, so fur us tho market valuo is coucorued, it is bettor than many othor stocks ovor which manipulation has control. Nor does miuiug stock stand nlouo iu this respect. Real ostuto is in tho sumo position, without having tho redeeming feature of paying a high rate of Interest, There aro many today who most sincerely wish that they could unload their real estato holdings, but find It im possible to do so. If miuiug is to bo used for purely speculative purposes, us u rule, it will 1)0 fouud unsatisfactory. Hut if money is put into it aud allowed to romutu thoro until tho proposition has proved its value beyond argu ment, it will bo fouud reasonably easy to dispose of tho stock. Inves tors and not speculators arc needed to develop mining. All the latest novelties in lints at Neil! Mercantile company's. NOTICE FOR PUBLICATION.
