West, of Baker City, secretary "and chief enigneer of the Sumpter Valley Railroad company, was In ' the city Monday taking preliminary ' observations for a siding which is to be put in for the accommodation of the Sumpter Lumber company. In company with J. IJ. Stoddard, general manager of the lumber com pany, Mr. West went over the ground and visited tho mill site to gather the necessary data. , The Sumpter Lumber company Is making active preparations for the Installation of its big plant. A force of thirty mon under tho superintend euco of U. T. Slaughter, Is now at work clearing tho mill slto and excavating for tho log pond which' is to bo put in at tho coufluouco of McCulloch and Cracker crooks. Superintendent McCammon, of the water and electric companies, received a letter from President Strahorn, who is traveling In Europe, stating that he expected to sail from Liverpool for New York about the 10th of April and will arrive here MBy 1.
