Wednesday, March 2;, .90$ THE Si'MPTER MIN'F.P 1? HIGH OPINION OF SUMPTER. Most Promising Gold Field in the Northwest, Says R. H. Clarke, of Spokane. The Sumpter district Is the most promising gold field in tho northwest, according to Roy II. Clark, E. M., of Spokane, who is back from a professional trip there, where he ex amined tho Cougar, controlled by J. W. Larkln, Darid Evans and C. P. Hole, of Spokano. Cyrus Bradloy and W. A. Hartmau of Spokano, have been negotiating for tho sale of the property to New York people. The deal is still pending. Said Mr. Clarke yesterday: "For legitimate mining invest ments in gold properotlos I know of 0 better section than that in tho Blue mountains of custom Oregon. Occupying an area 1.10 miles long by 40 miles wide, tho greater part of which is liuoxplored, well watered and timbered and surrounded by rich agricultural soctious, this section is beginning to attract tho attention itj dosorves from mining men. Overi 9100,000,000 in placer gold, chiefly from this section, is accredited to Oregon In tho past four years. Quartz mining is yet in its infancy, tho largo producers being opened up during tho past seven or eight years. Botwoen 80,000,000 and 80,000,000 In gold is tho production of tho aoctiou for 1002, as compared to u llttlo mora than 81,00,000 In 1800. "Tho boom in 1000 Induced over speculation, chiefly In real ostato In tho largor towns, which hurt to somo extout. Siuco that time, howovor, there has boon a steady dovolopmout of mining properties, resulting in most cases in great success, an evi denced by tho rapid Increase of pro duction. "Wo bear of tho much abused torms 'true, flssuro voiu,' 'well defined walls,' 'gauge,' 'continuous outcrop,' 'values increasing with deopth,' applied to almost any prospect of erod for sale, but theso expressions aro seldom so well merited and sel dom does the engineer got reassuring assays In placo of blanks auywhore in tho uorthwost as in tho gold hills of eastern Oregon. "The town of Sumpter, with a population of 3000, and rapidly growlug, occupies a central supply point for tho wholo district. "A number of Spokano people have interests there. Among them the John R. Cassia company has the Alamo, In tho Alamo district, which is said to lo showing much ore. Glass and Witherop have tho Orolluo, in tho same district. Hradloy and Haltormau have taken up a bond on tho Jay Ciould group about nine miles west of Sumpter. Tom C. Gray, formerly of Rossluud, is runn ing a proporty. Meuuo Uuzickor and Otto Herlocker, formerly of Rosslaud, aro also iu mining there." Spqksemau Review. Shoes of all kinds at Neill Mercantile company's. E. A. CLEM & CO.
