TALK OF THE TOWN.
M. J. and W, M. Koelama, viaited the
Magnolia mining property near Granite
Monday. Mr. M. J. Koelama waa aeen
yesterday by a Minkk represent itive
and gave tho following account of hia
impressiens:
Last fall, in the Interest of eastern
people of means, Mr. Koolsma senior,
thoroughly examined unci sampled the

Last Monday wan the third tlmo he
had visited ami inspected the mine. He
states that the Ajux vein, on which the
tunnel in now being driven, has Im
proved materially to what It wax at the
time of any pruvioiiH visit. It shows
more regularity in itn llsauriug, to uhu
IiIh metluMl of description, than in any
of the other workings or old HtopeB.
TIiIh tunnel on the Ajax ia being
driven to atrilco what in termed the nuw
vein, n llBMiiro crossing the Magnolia
and Ajax lodes at an angle of about
thirty degrees. The exiatanca of thia
vein, it apxarH, waa not known to the
former owners, and In a valuable asset
to the property.
On the surface it haa the evideuce of
great N.Hsibilitioa, and haw been de
velood by a ahuft which shown four
feet of free milling ore which will run
from f'JO to away up tlguren in gold er
tou. The present tunnel will have to
bo driven ninety feet to intersect thia
cross ledge at n depth of about "50 feet,
when, in Mr. ltoelauia'a opinion, an
immuuae body of ore will be encount
ered. W. M. Itoolsma, who la a thorough
mlllmaii, carefully examined the ten
stamp mill of the company, which ia
located on the ground, he describes it
as a well constructed reduction plant,
requiring but little repulra before it is
put in commission.
"The Magnolia company should be
grinding out the bullion by the first of
April," saiil Mr. M. J. ltoelsma. "They
have the ore and the mill on the ground
to reduce it. The only regret I have ia
that 1 could not secure the properly for
my associates and myself."
Hard Rock ia SciadU Tunnel.
Wait Wade, mining superintendent of
Granite, came over today. He states
that for seventy-live feet the long
Scandla tunnel in (Juebeu mountain has
the hardest rock ever encountered in
eastern Oregon, There are great hoje
that thia hard aoue ia one of tho walla
of the first vein and that they will soon
break through into the lead, which they
have now run over IfJOO feet to reach.
Claud Roe arrived yesterday from
Kearney, Nebraska.
Noil J. Sqrrensen returned from a
business trip to Portland a few days ago.
Joe Wooley, one of the solid citicena
of Granite, waa a Sumpter viaitor yesterday.
C. It. Roelsma arrived in the city on
.Sunday from Telluride, Colorado. He
ia an electrician by profeaaion. And will
follow hia vocation in this section in the
future.
Dr. Arthur V. Chance, of Portland,
arrived in town Monday to visit his
brother, Attorney C. H. Chance, for a
few days. Thia ia the doctor V first
visit to Sumpter.
G. A. Norkyko returned this morning
from Seattle, where he haa been visiting
hia aon for sovoral days. lie brought
back aB a souvenir, a one pound shell
from the liattle ship Oregon.
John Dooley had hia leg broken at the
Columbia mine last Friday. He waa
employed clearing away the debris from
tho shaft which recently caved in when
he waa caught by another cavet
Neil J. Sorenaen & Co are adding
more apace to their already commodious
quarters in the Holed Sumpter build
ing. They have secured the largest
room on the south aide of the building
adjoining their corner office.
Judge Fawcrtt camo in today from the
Psyche mine. He expresses himself as
very much vexed that the mining and
business men's committee, which he ap
pointed two and one haH months ago,
liad not yet hold a meeting and ap
ointed sub-committees.

F. O. Ituckman had an experience
with a colicy horse the other day which
waa not pleasant. He started for tho
Iron Dyke mine with a load of supplies
during the coldest weather. The India
