THE SUMPTER MINER
1?
TWO KINDS OF MINES.
One for Companies and An
other for Individuals.
Some people do not'appear to realize
that there are two Kinds of mines in
every district. That is, one class of
mines that should only be worked by a
company, and another class than can
only be made to pay when worked by
individuals. No doubt this statement
may appear strange to those who have
not given the subject much thought, but
it is true nevertheless. '
To illustrate; should a prospector
have a small vein, or a number of them.
If he is a practical man, he can associ
ate with himself two, three, or more
competent persons, they can, by doing
all the work themselves, develop the
vein, or veins, extract the ore and
market it. By this method they may
realize in tho long run probably much
tnoro than wages, and if frugal, in time
will have a competence if not a fortune,
If on the other hand, this same prop
erty was merged into a stock company,
the expenses of incorporation had to be
met, printing of certificates and other
stationery provided for, commission on
stock sales allowed, office expenses and
salaries of the necessary officers and
attachees paid, the real preliminary
outlay would in all probability be suf
ficient to keep a half dozen practical
miners going until they had sufficient in
sight to make them quite independent.
This rule applies to small veins, those
carrying sufficient value to pay a reason
able margin of profit when properly
managed. There are many instances
that could be cited where companies
have taken hold of mines of this class
and have come to grief because tho
quantity of ore was not between the
walls to justify the working of the claim
on thescale that an incorporated com
pany if supposed to carry on tlw busi
ness. Again there are mines which, if
handled as above set forth, tho practi
cal miner could not make tho salt which
seasons his food. Suppose the company
owning the Anaconda, or the owners of
any noted big mine of the world, were
to give, say a score of minors, all the ore
they could break in one of theso big
mines, they may also furnish them with
tools and powder and hoist the ore, yet
at the end of the month these miners
could not pay their hoard.
The reason for not having this is plain
his score of miners have not the means to
carry this ore on to its flaished stage. It is
too low in grado to be sold on the dump,
it must be transported, probably con
centrated, smelted and tlie metals re
fined before it has a value in tho mark
ets of the world, All this takes capital,
and an association of individuals, or a
company, must supply the capital.
These ideas are the fruits of exper
ience, and are facts. Narrow veins,
soon as proper accommodations, such as
boarding and bunk houses can be erect
ed, which will not be before spring ow
ing to tho scarcity of lumber.
The Mack Jack claims purchased last
fall by a company of Nebraska cap
italists organized in what is known as
tho Black Jack Gold Mining company,
with a capital stock of $1,500,000. Tho
group Is composed of five claims, known
as the Gray llock, Black Jack, Constel
lation, Congress and Presrntt, and aro
adjoining property to tho Oregon-Monarch
between the Alamo mine and tho
Oregon-Monarch, "both of which aro
proven mines.
Very little work has been done on the
Black Jack, though enough has been
done to provo it to bo the making of a
very valuable mine. The commencing
of operation, which will be kept up con
stantly until it is clearly demonstrated
what is in the claims, means much in
the up-building and future ! prosperity
of tho camp. Granite Gem.
NORTH POWDER MINES
Some of Our Neighbors Are
Preparing For Spring.
In tho last issue of the Powder Valley
Echo, is the subjoined list of mining
claims and an account of what is boing
done and their future prospectB, which
goes to show that there la something of
value in that vicinity.
On tho La Clede tho work of future
developing itsrlcli ore bodies will begin
early in the spring, erhaps in March,
and will continue until a sufficient body
of ore is expected to justify either the
erecting of a plant for its reduction, or
tho shipment of ore.
The Hughes group of mines adjoins
the La Clede on the south and south
east and it is expected that several
thousand dollars worth of work will be
done during the coming spring and
summer in still further developing the
several leads which pass through this
group.
Besides tho above, there is tho
Umatilla, upon which a considerable
amount of work will be dono. Also tho
Kelsey and other groups, lower down
the river, including those of Mitchell,
Hlnkloy and others.
It is also understood that the River
dale and Keystone mines will be work
ed to a considerable extent with a
strong probability of the Kiverdale mill
being put into working condition.
There will also bo a considerable
amount of work dono on the group
located last year by G. II. Downs, alsoon
that of Downs and Vundecar; whllo
iiKn numerous other claims and
groups, at least the usual assessineut
work will bo dono
Work will also be started up on the
Buckeye. Arrangements are being made
to start work on this valuable property
just as soon as proper machinery can be
obtained and placed in position. After
pumping out tho water and getting
every thing in readiness a larger force
than ever before will bo put to work
and development work will be con
stantly pushed until the value of the
mine is thoroughly established.
Besides this mention of claims around
North Powder we will soon be able to
give information regarding the Rock

"splinters," and in many instances
pocket veins, are not for big companies
to operate on. They are, or should be
the holdings of the individuals. Large
leads or deposits, no matter what the
grade, as long as it will leave a margin,
is the class of mines that the company
.should manipulate.
