THE SUMPThR MINER
OREGON'S WEALTH
IN MINERALS
Some Figures as to the Extent
of Eastern Oregon.
Kastcrn Dragon' mining district is so
broad that it hardly seems propper to
embrace it under one inline. Ilegiuning
in the Seven Devils district of Idaho,
with tliu uopiwr lelt most pronounced,
and the ltiiuaha mid Panhandle sections
of Oregon, the broad zone of commercial
iniuerali.atlon extends southwestward.
Sub-districts of a few siiuaru miles
area, distributed at freuent intervals
over a length of 1-10 miles and width of
JO, indicate the thoroughness with which
trie precious and useful metals have been
deposited in the eastern part of tlds
state.
It is this immensity of the mineral
zone that bewilders jteoplo who hear of
the mines. They become familiar with
one or two proertie8 in a single district.
They think they know the entire region.
While they are engaged on this dot,
scores of properties in other parts of the
region are rising or declining, according
to the laws that govern mining develop
ment. Judgment is often passed on
eastern Oregon's mines from the mere
knowledge of a single property.
Kvery formation known to the mining
world is found hero. Kvery variety of
metal common to the country may be
extracted. Kvery phase of the industry
is exemplified, and eoplo from all parts
of the world are assembling to develop
.and operate these mines.
Hut while there is such variety, the
name of the district is being built upon
gold. Copper is slowly asserting greater
strength. Its exploitation is u slow
.process, and while presence of the red
metal has been an established fact here
ior years, at the present time there is
jiot a large amount of development in
.progress to open exclusively coperde-
JH)SitS.
As a by product copHir is uppearing
in some of the large mines, where depth
lias been attained, with prospect of
great increase. The presence of copper
ores in the (Srcciihorn district in quanti
ties eagerly nought by Muellers is the
moat important development there.
An abundance of the metal in tho
QuarUburq district has also been better
proven during tho year. The work
done on the Iron Dyke mine, of the
Panhandle, has opened an immense de
posit. Evening Telegram.
OPERATIONS ON THE IRON DYKE
Manager Determined to Skip First to the
Smelter.
. A full crew of men are now at work
on the Iron Dyke mines, property of the
Listen Lake Mining company. The
Iron Dyke is located at the head of Mc
Namee gulch, west of Whitney.
A four horse sled loaded with sup
plies (or the mine was sent out a few
days since, and more will follow as re
quired. Manager Bucknum is determined to
have the satisfaction of being the first
shipper to the Smelting works of the
Oregon Smelting and Refining company
of Sumpter, when their sampling mill is
ready so they can receive ore.
Tfc Mormon Tempi.
The Mormon temple at Salt Lake City
is no doubt the most substantial and
well constructed religious edifice in the
United States, if not in the world.
Comer stone laid April 6,1863, cap stone
April 6, 1892 and dedicated April 6, 1893
over forty years of constant labor being
consumed In its construction. This
magnificent structer 200 feet lone. 100
feet wide is built entirely of Utah white
granite, beautifully carved, symbolic of
the Mormon faith, surmounted by six
towers, tho highest being 230 feet from
the ground, supporting a bronze statue
of the angel Maroni. Tho cost of this
building is about $0,000,000. There are
many other attractions at Salt I.nkn
t'lty of interest to tho traveler or tourist
, where a day can bo well spent. The
, Kio Grande is the only Trans-continental
I mute passing directly through Salt Uke
j City, where a stopover is allowed on all
classes ot tickets. The servico of tho Kio
) Grande lines is unexcelled. Three trains
I dally between Ogden and Denver, carry
' iug all classes of modern equipment. If

IMPROVEMENTS IN
PHOTOGRAPHIC ART
Mr. J. W. Cowden Takes Plain
Views Eleven Miles
Distant.
A few weeks since Mr. J. W. Cowden,
Sumpter's noted landscape photo
grapher, received from Germany an
instrument which is tho latest improved
apparatns for panoramic photography
in tho known world.
This camera is styled tho Telephoto
lens, and for long distance views never
has, and probably never will, have an
equal.
On the 10th instant, Mr. Cowden took
his first views with this acme of per
fection in picture taking science.
Ho placed tho Instrument on a moun
tain peak about one and one-half miles
west of the Annululu mines in the
Cracker Creek district, north of Sump
tor. The picture obtained has a width of
twenty inches, and is really a thing of
beauty to the most exacting artist ns
well as tho novice in the art of repro
ducing nature by meaiiB of mechanical
appliances and chemicals.
In the view taken such well known
mines and groups as the Annulnlu,
Amaxon, Mountain Helle, Oregon King,
Golconda, Columbia, K. & K., Cracker
Oregon, North Pole, South Pole, Itig
Horn, Cracker Kaglo, Cracker Jack and
others can bo seen, as well as the build
ings, dumps, etc., on them.
From the point whore Mr. Cowden
set his instrument to tho North Pole
aerial tramway' tho distance in an air
line, is five and ono-half miles, yet tho
towers of the (tramway can be plainly
seen in the picture, and by looking
closer, the two steel cables one ineh in
diameter, can be soon strung along on
the towers.
This view also takes in the top of the
mountain west of the ISaisley-Elkhorn
group, a distance of eleven miles air
line from where the Telephoto was
placed. So plain is the picture taken
from this great distance, that the trees
on the. mountain side can be counted;
and were a man or dog within range of
the lenz they could easily be dis
tinguished from surrounding objects.
Some idea of the value of .this up-to-date
lens may be gained from the cost
of them. Mr. Cowden paid $227 for the
one he now owns, and would not part
with it for a considerable advance.

ON GREENHORN'S
SNOWY MOUNTAINS
What is Transpiring in One
of Sumpter's Productive
Fields.
A professional man who has just re
turned from a several days trip to the '
Greenhorns, furnishes the following in
formation regarding that interestingand
productive region :
There Is more real activity in the
Greenhorns now than ever before In
the history of that section. Tho roads
are all open so that all mints can bo
reached with ease.
The average tenierature at this sea
son is from twenty to thirty degrees
warmer at Greenhorn city than at Whit
ney, which is 2000 feet nearer sea level.
Kleven feet of snow has fallen so far
in tho Greenhorns. This has settled
until now it is four feet on a level, and
is packed sulliciently solid to allow of
excellent traveling on the crust without
the aid of snow shoes.
Steps are being taken to incorporate
the town of Greenhorn. The proixmed
city limits to be one and one-fourth by
two and one-half miles. This will in
clude a number of tho producing mines.
ProscctH and mines are being de
veloped. Stamp mills are Mtunding
away merrily, and bars of gold bullion
and loads of concentrates are contin
ually being shipHd.
Sullivan Itrothera have purchased tho
large hotel building at Alamo, and are
tearing it down preparatory to moving
and rebuilding it at Greenhorn City.
