Hydrants have been inapected once
each mouth, according to the seasons of
the year, and as conditions made it
necessary for the chief of thu depart
ment to keep inf'irmed regarding the
serviceability of the hydrants. At thu
date of the iHst lnsH'ction of the past
month all hydrants were in good condi
tion, with one exception, and that Iuih
since been repaired. An ample supply
of water, with pressure of ulxuit eighty
pounds, is now had, and all apparatus
is In good condition.
You are to be congratulated iimii the
small loss to thu city for the year from
tlrcH, and, while good fortune and the
vigilance of the firemen have each con
tributed their share, I most earnestly
call your attention to the growth of
Sumpter and its growing needs. While
the present hose has Iteen adequate for
all tires in the past, yet the closing up
of hulldiuga on former vacant lots, the
building of long frame structures, and
the absence from our city ordinances of
a tire limit, make it almost a necessity
for more hose as an additional safeguard
to our prctent equipment.
A hydrant should bo placed at the
corners of High and Columbia streets.
In this connection I would suggest to
the council that no more single hydrants
bo bought, and that double liydrantH lie
purchased and substituted for the
singles on Granite and Mill streets, and
the single hydrants now in use there tie
placed in the residence 'portion of the
city from time to time as they may be !

I would also recommend the repair
of the roof of the hose house at the city
hall, which in leaking badly, and will
en u so damage unless placed in better
condition.
