"Worth Your While"
D. L. Killuu left Friday for hmiiu Kint
in Wyoming expecting to Iw alisunt u
week. While in linker City ho Mnti'd to
a reporter 011 one of of the paper there,
in a nonchalant, matter of fact cort of
way, as if he were merly annonncin
another rich Btriku in one of IiIh proK;r
tioa.or the Hale of a group 0 claims, that
ills linn, tlic Killen, Warner & Stewart
company, had completed arrangements
for the constructions of rnilnry lines to
the several camps continious to Sampler.
Now, this is a newt) item that Tiik
MtNKit has been looking for every week
during the past two years; one that Mr.
Killen evidently considered of not
HUlllcicnt iniH)trancu to mention to local
reporters. Hut it is a fact, nevertheless.
Tiik Mixkk hns investigated the matter
and learned from three or four authori
tative sources that arrangements have
actually been complened tor the con
struction of these lines.
Hy this it is ment that tho nccssary
money has been secured. The details
of construction have not yet been sot
tied. The road will bo a narrow gauge,
of course, as the equipment for a standard
gauge could not be brought in here from
Baker City. To start with, the motive
power will bo steam, which can be
changed toelectric when some of the big
water-electric, power companies now in
process of incubation are prepared to
furnish the power. The lirst Ihie will bo
built from here to Cable Cove district ;yia
Dourne, taking in the big mines in the
Cracker Creek district. The actual
work of construction, of cource, can not
bo commenced untill spring. Material
will be assembled, however, so as to
begin actual operations as soon as the
snow disappears. The next line to be
built will be to Granite and on through
the Ked Boy district to Alamo, with a
branch up Granite creek to the Cougar,
Magnolia, Monumontal,01d Arastra and
other mines in that rich district.
Of course, the construction here of the
splendid smelter rendered this big
proposition possible As a matter of
fact, the impression prevails that the
two companies are closely allied; as it
is known that tho people behind the
Oregon Reduction company are them
elves men of targe means, who can
command practically unlimited capital.
Out at the smelter, work is progress
ing very rapidly. The laboratory build
ing is completed, with the exception of
the inside finishings. Much of the
equipment has arrived. The building
ior the automatic sampler, of 400 tons
daily capacity, has been framed and will
soon be enclosed. The heavy timbers
for the engine and boiler room are also
in place.
A large force of brick masons are now
at work on the dust chamber and stack.
The former will be 120 feet iu length,
including a "calm" room, 20 by 28 feet
in sise, and 14 feet high. This ia at the
tack end of the chamber. There is
another smaller calm room at the other
end. The stack will be 126 feet in
iieighth. Both will be completed in a
month.
The sampler will be ready for the r-
f ception of ore by January I.
hat was considered one of the great
est obstacles to lie overcome in the opera
tion of this smelter was to get asulllcient
quantity of copper ores for lluxing
purposes, has already been overcome.
The management informs Tiik Mixkk
that it hasalready secured twice as much
as is really iiecewnry, all to bo mined iu
a reasonable distance from Suinpter.
This information was accompanied by
the statement that even the ieople liv
ing iu the gold fields nf eastern Oregon,
those engaged iu mining have no con
ception of the resources of this country,
which are really limitless.
Another thing the iieonle herealKiuts
do not seem to realize is tliu vast im
portance this smelter is going to prove
to our mining industry. It is going to
stimulate development to an extent that
can now scarcely lw computed and
make this, within a few years, the
greatest gold producing region on the
globe.
Tho railroad will facilitate this prog
ress almost as much as tho smelter and
the t wo together insure its accomplish
ment. This can mean nothing else than
that;Sumpter will continue for all time
to be the center of mining operations,
the industrial as well as the speculative;
which, in turn, means that Sumpter
will in a few years bo the second city in
Oregon, and a close second, too.
FIVE GOOD REASONS.
That the Rio Grrndo route is the most
opularono between the Tacilic coast
and tho east, is evidenced by the fact
that the greater per cent of transconti
nental travelers use it.
First, tho scenic attractions in view
from trains are unequaled in the world.
Second, tho daily personally conduct
ed tourist car excursions being especial
ly adapted for ladies traveling alone or
with children, affords a comfortable
mode of travel at rates within reach
of all.
Third, it is the only route between tho
east and west passing directly through
Salt Lake City, or modern ion.
Fourth, the choice of two distinct
routes through the heart of the Rocky
mountains.
Fifth, three fast through trains daily
between Ogden and Denver equipped
with every modern convenience.
There are many 'other reasons 'why
this route is tho most comfortable and
enjoyable in the whole country.
You can learn a great deal on the sub
ject of through travel, and receive some
very beautiful and interesting booklets,

OUT IN THE Famous Cable Cove
district there is a prospect that
is the making of a great mine.
This we know to be an absolute fact, be
cause on both sides of it the ledges have
been proven to be wide and rich, both
width and values increasing to a known
depth of 1000 feet. On these particular
claims sufficient development work has
been done to demonstrate that the ore
is there.
We need money with which to block
out and treat the ore, and you can get in
on this good thing at ground floor prices.
You can buy an interest, large or small,
in a property that is sure to develop into
a mine, at a figure usually charged for an
unproven prospect.
Write and let us submit to you an ex
ceptionally favorable proposition.
