C. Wright, manager of the Sargent Lumber coniNtuy, whose plant ia situ ated near Lawton, has secured asiiito of offices in the Hotel Sumpter, which he will occupy as a1 mining headquarters during the fall and winter. Mr. Wright ha been quite successful in Ida mining ventured and has strong financial back ing. ti. W. Imndageu, a prosjierous far mer of Waitaburg, Washington, was in the city laat week, aeeking an opportun ity to invent aome of bin surplus fundH in mining. Mr. Loundagen wax the firwt settler in the Walla Walla country aftei the army poet wan established there. He took up a homestead in that vicinity over forty-one years ago. A DitttaguUuil VWtor. The Right Itev. H. WisUr Morris, I. P., bishop of Oregon, paid 8umpter a brief visit last week. The reverend gen tleman has been in his present high of rice for the past thirty-live years. Ilisliop Morris stands out conspicuously before the people of Oregon as the man who has done, more than any other single man, much for this state in a moral and benevolent feme. He established the Good Samaritan hospital and founded St. Helen's Hall, a splendid academy for young ladies, both in Portland ; he was also the means of establishing schools, churches and benevolent associations throughout Oregon. For sixty years he baa preached to his fellow citizens, and even now, at the venerable age of eighty three, he is still hard at it, working in cessantly for the betterment of mankind and taking care of his ample diocese. The bishop comes of'an old and honor able family, his grandfather being ono of the signers of the Declaration ot In dependence. He' was highly pleased with the progress Mr. Goodheart was making here in the church line and complimented tho ladies for their good work. He preached an eloquent sermon on Sunday evenitiK, and left for the west on Monday's train. ' Public Schools Opta. Tho fall and winter term of tho city schools hegan on Monday last, with UK) pupils in attendance. This numlicr will be greatly increased within one month, as man families now outside will move to town so their children can have school advantages. The enrollment will lw larger than in any former year. Profes sor I). W. Yoder, late of Salem, is the principal in charge, assisted by the fol lowing teachers: Miss Tcel, seventh and eighth grades; Miss Kckersley, tilth and sixtli grades; Miss Greenlee, third mid fourth grades ; Miss Gillespie, second and third grades; Miss Thomas, chart and tlrst grade. Wagon Road to Ptychc Mine. A new wagon road will soon lie built from the Psyche mine, via the Don Juan, Phoenix and Snow Creek mines, down Snow creek and Hurnt river, following a water grade to Whitney. This new im provement is to facilitate tho shipment of ores and concentrates to the smelters. OFFICIAL RECORDS.
