Wednesday, September 4, 1901 THE SUMPTER MINER MALHEUR COUNTY OIL FIELDS. Excited Praeeector Have Located! SectloeM of Laad There. Yesterday United States Deputy Min eral Surveyor L. W. Burtch returned to Baker City with a party of prospect ors, who have just located 1280 acres of 'land in this oil belt, and this afternoon deeds to the land were executed to Wm. Albrecht, Jno. Miles, L. W. Burtch, T. M. Albrecht, D. A. Miles, P. II. Miles, Jas. A. Johnson and F. M. Ricker, con veying to them separate portions of the land located. Engineer Burtch, who surveyed the land, is confident that if they do not open a gusher they will find oil at no great depth in paying quantities, and many Baker City people are going to join the procession of pros pectors. When questioned in regard to the find Mr. Burtch said that he had been pros looting there sometime and that old timers have known for years that there were indications of oil there. "The land lies about eight miles southwest cf Vale, in Malhuer county. It is a barren, wild waste covered with sugebrush. The ground is fossil formation containing shells, gypBtim, sandstone, lime shales, pyrites, lignites and clays. We brought up u large number of samples of the rock. Here are some specimens. Yes, I think tlio oil is thvre." The samples of rock exhibited by Mr. Burtch are very peculiar and filled with perfect shells, including oyster shells, and would be very valuable to the scien tist hunting for evidences of past geolog ical periods, but the interest to the peo--pie here in this peculiar rock is the fact that it is so impregnated with oil as to smell very strongly of petroleum. On the surface of tho streams of water in the vicinity can be seen floating u thin scum of oil, more particularly notico- able in tho quiet mhIh along the hanks. Mr. Burtch und his ustociates proiwse to organize a com puny nt once and start boring a well. Kvery man of them be lievcM they will let out a gusher. Oth- posed the crew during the last few days of the work, O. D. Taylor, Jr. having returned to The Dalles some time since. The townships, the survey ing of which had been awarded to Mr. Angell, were somo of the rough est on the Strawberry mountain range. Many places were encountered that it required a day to cover the distance of one mile. This survey, the Eagle la in formed, has besn made at the instance of the Eastern Oregon Land Co., to en able them to select lands In lieu of lands within the limits of Tho Dalles military wagon road grant, which the .company lost by being previously settled upon. Wm. E. Campbell, of The Dalles also has a contract for the survey of several townships in the same locality, which work ho will soon have completed. Blue Mountain Eagle. Union County Has a Shipper. Wm. Muir returned to the mining district of Union county with a load of supplies and with more men for oixirat- ing the large mino from which he will at once begin to mako shipments Everything is in readiness for the trans portatlon of ore to tho smeltor at Mur ray, Utah. The bags wore unloaded yesterday at Hilgard, and tho ore is on. the dump ready to bo shoveled In Three cars will bo shiped at once, and one car each month during the fall and winter. Tho road will bo kept open and from A to 12 men-will bo kept constantly at work in the mines. Mr, Muir knows almost to a certainity whut results to expect. He had a sample bag of what he considers the poorest ore shipped to Murray to be tested. Tho result showed 110 ounces of silver and one-half ounce of gold. From this he judges that his monthly clearances will be about $2000. Messrs. Packard and Groesbeck, mining exports, will us slst in tho ocrutioii of the mino and will wutch developments with u view to purchasing in the spring. Making tho location comprint, (I) find ing valuable mineral ; (2) marking on the ground the boundaries of the locu tion of the discovery; (3) lasting a writ ten notice of locution with tho name of the locator, the date, und a description of the claim thut describes it so it can bo identified on the ground, and (4) en tering into possession and continuing that imssession, by every year doing the animal assessment work. Doing these things, the ground is not subject to re location. FaUurto record -a location does not create a forfeiture. A claim may be void from the beginning because of an Improper location, not properly 'marking boundaries or posting notice. It is only forfeited by failure to do assess ment work. A legal location held 26 years in conformity with law can not be forfeited because the locators failed to record the notice. Mining and Scien tific Press. La Grande Chronicle.
