Tiik . Minkii urgoil tho cUixoun of Sump
ter to accept It. V.. Strahorn's lihorul
offer to huy tho ImiiiiIh of thfocchool din
Irlcl, to draw only live kt ci'iit interest,
erect a brick hiillding and make our
puhlie schools as ellicient as sissihlc.
It w:'.h Miiulel tatt that the additional
taxation would lie scarcely notichle,
owing to the Miving in rent and the re
duction of the present rale of interest.
It, uik further argued that piod eehoofo
would act as a niuguol to draw families
here to reside, increase our ulatlou
and trade. These facts and uggen
tjons were either unheeded, or wausl
aside with the remark: "Oh, next year
will he soon ciftiugh to talk about build
ing another scliool house."
So soon as the present, time has
demonstrated the wisdom of Tiik
Minkh'h advise. Our schools are not
only not attracting families to Sumpter,
hut their lack of elliciuncy Ih driving
people away from here. One family
will move to llaker City next week, for
the solo purpose of affording the chil
dren better scliool advantages than are
offered here. Three- girls from Sump
ter, one family and half a dozen or
more girls from tho vicinity of Granite
go to Haker City for the same purpose.
These are not all, only those of whom
Tin: Minkii has heard. All should be at
scliool in Sumpter and would be had
the citizens of Sumpter made the best
of its opportunities.
This town is sleeping, dreaming of the
big business it is doing with the trll
utary mining districts. To use a com
mon expression, "there is no string on"
tills trade take the Siisauvillu district,
for Instance, and proof. If it doesn't
wake up soon, It will leant on being
rudely aroused some tine, not distant
day, that other towns were working a
double shift, while we were doing the
self satisfied slumbering net. Sumpter
is doing an immense, prolltable business
this season, and should endeavor to in
crease Ibis trade, instead of being satis
lied and thus stand the chance of lin
ing it. There is no heller opening on
earth than right here for an inteligent,
energetic public spirited man who has
an ambition to he a "prominent citi
zen." Famous.
