An ordinance governing tlio construe tion of side walks and crosswalks. Thk City op Sumitkr Doks Ordain ah Follows : Section 1. All sidewalks and cross walks hereafter constructed within the limits of tlio City of Sumpter, unless otherwise ordered or allowed by the council, shall be constructed in accord ance with the provisions of the charter and of this ordinance. Section 2. The plunk covering of all sldewulks heraftor constructed on Mill street from Granite street to Auburn street, and on (i rani to street from Mill to Cracker street, and on Center street from Granite street to Sumpter street, shall extend froin the roorty lino to the curb line, and such plunk covering shall bo not lens than two incites in thickness. The plunk covering on ull other streets shall be not less tliun six feet in w idth and of not less than an inch and a half in thickness. All side walks shall be so laid that the vacant spuce. if uny, between the proerty line and the curb line shall be equal. Section.). In all sidewalks of more than six feet in width, there shall be .placed not less than four sills, and in sidewalks six feet in width there shall le placed three sills. The sills shall lie not less than 4x4 or 2x11 inches, placed at equal distances apart and parallel with the curb line for the covering plank to rest upon, which covering plank shall in all cases be placed at right uugles to to tho curb line. The covering plunk of all sidewalks slum not ue more tnan eight inches in width, and shall bo fast ened to the sills at each bearing by not less than two thirty-jteuuy nails. The ends of the sills or stringers shall be firmly fastened by being spiked to the blocks or stanchions tion which they rest, or in cuse they shall bo laid upon tho ground, they shall bo fastened to each other at tho ends thereof. In all cases where the sills shall not rest upon the earth, they shall rest upon blocks not less than 4x0x12 inches, resting on a wooden base not lees than 12 inches square by three inches thick: th blocks shall be not more (han 6 feet aart un der each sill. Section 4. Every sidewalk which may hereafter be constructed on a street which has been graded, shall conform to he grade of sucli street and shall be built not less than 8 nor more than 12 inches higher than the grude of tho street at the curb line. Section 5. All Sidewalks hereafter constructed shall have a sIoihj of one quarter inch to each foot of width from tlio proierty Hue to the curb line. Section (t. All crosswalks ucross streets shall bo not less than six feet in width, and shall be built of lumber not less than three inches in thickness, laid lengthwise across the street. Cross walks shall rest uxm sills not less than four inches in thickness and six inches in width, placed not more than four feet apart. Crosswalks shall be so laid that they will be not less than three inches nor more than four inches higher than the level of tho street, except that the outside plunk on each side of said cross walk shall slo)0 to the level of the street, so that the upier surface thereof shall bo level with said street. Cross walks shall ho so laid as to Is in line with the sidewalks they connect. Section 7. When tin ordinance, has been passed for the construction of a sidewalk of crosswalk, it shall be tho duty oi the city recorder to at once give written notlcu to each owner of prncrty liahlo for the cost of construction of such sidewalk or crosswalk of tho passage of such ordinance, which notice shall do scrilo the character of the improvement ordered with reasonable certainty, and shall bo mailed to such property owner ut his last known address, and if uny property owner so notified shall, within ten days from the service of such notice UK)ii him, (ail to commence work uou tho construction of such sidewalk or crosswalk, or if liuving commenced the same, shall full thereafter to continu ously prosecute such work until it is completed, it shall bo the duty of the recorder to ascertain the Probable cost of such uncompleted work and report the sumo to the council, and the council shall, by ordinance declare the probable cost of such Improvement and such im provement shall thereafter be made in accordance with the provisions of the charter. .
