THE SUMPTER MINER
11
Ancient Mexican Mining Methods.
William It. Ruuifdull, who represent
ed Flathead county, Montana, for two
terms in the state senate, and who for a
number of years was prominent in both
mining and political circles in that state,
is in the city, registered from San Diego,
Cal. For the past two years he 1ms been
mining in lower California. "Early last
spring I heard of a property in the state
of Jalisco, near Guadalajara," he said.
"I immediately bought it. The mine
was in a very old district. Some of the
properties, tradition says, have been
working for over .iOO years. 1 found a
country new, in the sense of not having
any foreign capital, and no machineryof
modern pattern or methods for working
its mines. The common system for
handling ores in that section is the
'pateo,' which is a chlorination process,
in which salt is thrown into the ore and
tramped by mules, bringing the salt in
contact with all the metal, which forms
a chloride. Then quicksilver is thrown
in and the same process of tramping and
lnrnting is continued. The amalgam is
then retorted, which giu-s the pioduct
in its pure state. They save by this
crude process from 50 to 70 per cent of
the values in their ore. Wages in this
district is 5'J cunts pjr diy, Muxiem sil
ver. While there I let several contracts
for drifting and tunnel work at from 70
cents to if 1.10 per foot, the latter was for
hard rock which had to ho handled 500
feet. As far as ellleieney goes, I consider
Mexican labor about two-thirds that of
white labor, ami in many instances of
handling heavy loads or using wheel
barrows the Mexicans will do men more
than the average white man." Spokes
