Wednesday, July 24, 1.901 THE SUMPTER MINER 1 1 METALLURGICAL TRIUMPHS. Show the Sclentbts Your Ore and He Will DcvIk & Treatment. It can truly bo Baid that on-.' of tho most important factors entering into mining 'operations on a large and diver sified scalo at tho present time, and tlio satisfactory results- being chronicled, -can be designated as the "metallurgical triumphs" of this day and age, and the bringing of ore reduction methods and processes nip to an exact science. Years ago but few ways of extracting metallic values from ores were known to the mining world. Tho stamp mill was the favorite in the handling of free-milling gold and Bilvcr ores, and with fire a certain elass of rebellious ores could bo successfully treated. At this point tho miner and mlllmun encountered break ers "ahead," and while many proposi tions of merit and value npiHsuled to them strongly, they were compelled to ignoro mining propositions which, today are being oerated at a lutndsome protit because of tho invention and discovery of methods for oro treatment which were not oven droamod of twenty-ilvo .years ago. For instance, tho concen trating tablo is of quite recent origin, And, by its use, low grado sulphide ores can be handled at a profit which wero practically valuless .several years ago. Low grade oxide gold ores, ten years aigo, wero worthless until tho discovery and utilization of tho cyanide process, and now base ores of Jow value can Iks successfully milled by the cyanido pro cess after first being roasted. Low grado copper ores are also being treated successfully at tho present time that would not havo been looked at by the miuing oporetor and mill man of .fifteen years ago, and this because of tho fact that tho pyritie smelter or roaster has become an important fuctor in pre paring ores .of this character for tho " smelter stack and refinery, iu addition to which several copier-leaching pro cesses havo been invented by tho uso of which low grado copier ores can bo worked to advantage und at a profit. Then we have now methods for tho re covery of values from tailings and slimes, and, in placer mining operations, tho inventive genius Jias perfected various appliances so that the Jlno and flour gold can be arrested and diverted to tho copper plate or amalgam pot. Tho suc cesses attending the research and un tiring efforts of the anillmaa, tho metal lurgist and chemist in the endeavor to perfect methods for the successful re covery of the precious metals and their by-products, have been attended by such magnificent triumps that in these days no mining project need bo rejected be cause of tho belief that this or that class of ores can not bo successfully worked. Show tno metallurgist your oro and lie will Bhow you .a process lor us muni tion. To this fact can bo attributed the unqualified success which has attended mining operations during tho past few vears, and this conditiou is largely re sponsible for the widespread Interest now being taken In mining operations the world over.
