THE SUMPTER MINER
OUR CELEBRATION.
Big .Crowd Gathered Here
Highly Pleased.
The Fourth of July celebration in
'Sumpter was entirely tmcccsxful. The
men who had chnrgo of the nffnir, in
every branch, performed their duties
-well and deserve the tlmnks of the en
tire community. People enmo in from
every direction, were well cared for,
continuously entertained and went
away in n good humor with Sumpter
and her citizens. One feature of the
day, particularly, is worthy of commen
dation ; thero wero no long delays be
tween events to tiro the waiting crowd.
From the moment tho procession started
on its march in tho forenoon until tho
greased pig was caught in tho twilight
of evening, the program and tho crowd
wero kept moving.
Of course, tho leading feature, the
big event of the day, was tho rock drill
ing contest. Five teams entered, who
drilled in this erder: Taggcrt and Ken
nedy, linker City, 27 inches j Hall and
Itossmnn, llalxluy-Klkhorn, U8J inches;
licttleri and Cavness, lialslcy-Klkhoru,
20?X inches; Flauncry, and Andregg,
Cable Cove, 32 inches ; Hodgu and Dunn,
Muniiuotli, :I2,'h inches, tho last named
team winning thu first prize of fJGO
offered by the conimitteo and ffiO given
by Stlnson & Grainger. Tlio Cablo Cove
team missed $251) by a close eighth of an
inch, receiving second money, 50,
Tho winning team last year, from tho
Grand Trunk, ono of whom was Dunn,
also winner of this year's event, cap
tured the big purso and tho diamond
medals given by the ladies, with a hole
-SOa inches deep, m that record wos
beaten Thursday by ljtf iuehex. Last
year the' winners of tho kvoihI pristo
drilled only a fraction over 22 inches.
Five members of Troop 11 entered the
tournament. Lieutenant Hhelton won
tho purse, after live tie heats with Char
ley Van Duyn.
Htvo company No. 2 won both tho
hub and tho wet races. It was composed
ofMes-TS. Wood, Mooro, Isaacs, Iler
locker, Wiedermarks, Sullivan, F. and
J. .Tallefaro. Harley Wood and Charley
Moore nuido tho coupling in tho wet
race in three scoiids.
The finance conimitteo is coming in
for much praise. Not only all of tho
bills contractu! this year, but 50 on
last year's shortage, has lieen paid. No
one succeeded in climbing the greased
polo and securing tho deed to tho town
lot, donated by the Townslto company,
no it is being rallied off.
