Ozocerite, or mineral wax, is n resin ous substance, in many respects resemb ling beeswax. It is found in Austria Hungary, Ilussiu, Uouniunla, Egypt, Al geria, Canada, and Mexico, usually in connection with rock salt and coal ; but, so far, it has not been discovered any where in siillleient quantities to pay for the mining except in the district of Horyslaw, in the Austrian l'rovidco of Galicia, ami to a limited extent at Tchelokan, an island on tho west coast of the Caspian sea, writes Consul Frank W. llossfeld, of Trieste. The existence of mineral wax in the petroleum district of Uoryslow was known about a century ago, but for more than GO years it was turned to no ac count. In 18. 1, one It. Dums, a mer chant of Lemberg, opened a mine with u view of utilizing ozocerite for illimiinat ing purposes. lie also Invented n lamp adapted to the employment of this com bustible and bad it patented. The successful working of this mine attracted the attention of a largo num ber of speculators, who proceeded to buy from the poor peasants' small tracts of laud known to contain deposits of tho coveted material, and to sink shafts upon their holdings, until 18(!5 there were 3 3 J ! around ltoryslow, on an are.i of oulyKS X sipiare mile, no less than 1 1,000 ozocerite J pits, varying in depth from 'Jo to 170 J feet.
