Editor Minkr: I have been in Cali
fornia two weeks. I have, by observa
tion and inquiry, informed myself pretty
thoroughly of the mining situation in
this state, and it all convinces mo that
Sumpter mining district is as progres
sive and perhaps more promising than
anything in California.
I am now in Placer county. Adjoin
ing on the north is Nevada county, two
of the oldest mining sections in tho
state, and one of them tho largest pro
ducer in the state.
From all I can see and learn, less pro
gress has been mado in the past four
years, in' tho way of developments, than
was made in any ono of your districts
during last season, and I am sure the
output of several of tho Sumpter dis
trict mines exceeds tho best in either of
thoso two counties, notwithstanding
their age and reputation.
Comparisons are said to bo odious, but
a comparison of tho mining outlook
here and in eastern Oregon will certain
ly projudico an impartial observer in
favor of tho Northwest.
In Sumpter wo sometimes get tho
idea that it is a little slow and that
greener fields exist over tho hills, some
whero elso, but a trip into such favored
sections will soon convince one that
Sumpter and its surroundings are all
right. I .believe thoro is no better fiold
known I certainly do not believe thoro
is one in this state.
Wo, in Sumpter, think unless a big
mine is discovered and opened each sea
son that tho country is going back. I
find men still prospecting hero on ledges
they were at work on four and six years
ago, and lmvo no idea whatever of
throwing up the spongo, and there are
lots of them, which if in Sumpter dis
trict, would have been abandoned tho
first pennon I know of four mines here,
and hereabouts, that have had moro
money, and four times tho time spent
on them than on your biggest producers,
that have never dreamed of paying a
dividend, and it is safe to say that the
number of dividend payers all over tho
state can be numbered with two small
figures.
It is probable that what I say is well
known to mining operators, and that is
the reason so many look over tho east
ern Oregon gold fields.
Ten years from now I verily belie vo
the Sumpter district will bo world fa
mous for its gold production and its

ton mino Friday. Ho called at this of
fico and informed us that they had
struck tho gonuino sylvanito oro. A
tunnel was run into the hillsido 175 feet,
about 00 feet from the top of tho hill,
and when about 75 feet in, they struck
some coarse (told, in tho shape of flakes.
Therefore, when in about 175 feet they
turned buck and sunk a shuft down ut
tho placo whero they struck tho coarse
gold. They wcro only down 10 foot in
tho shaft when they struck tho sylvan
ito ore. They ulso found considerable
of tho fluko gold, of which, ono flako was
measured with a string around tho edgo
of it, and it meusured five inches. Prai
