THE SUMPTER MINER
12
PROSPECTING THE HALMA.
Be
Big Ledge From Which Colon Can
Panned Everywhere.
J. B. McManus came In from the Halma
group of mines, In the Greenhorn moun
tains, Sunday afternoon and left today
with a wagon load of supplies. He says
that he Is thoroughly prospecting the big
ledge on that property, through the me
dlum of open cuts, before doing any
heavy work In the way of development.
He has gone down on the ledge about ten
feet and says the rock Improves even In
that short distance. Colors can be panned
everywhere.
Mr. McManus Is an assayer and has
had much experience for so young a man
In practical mining, principally In the
Cascades, of Washington. .This Is his
first visit to the gold fields of eastern
Oregon, and he Is enamored with the
region, as a mining proposition. His re
gret Is that he didn't come In here two or
three years ago, before he and his father
put In a hundred or so thousand in the In
dex copper district.
He says that about a mile from his
claims there is a property which the owner,
whose name Is Shepherd, calls the Oregon
Ground Hog, that Is the queerest gold
bearing formation he has ever seen. The
free coarse gold Is found In seams, em
beded in tale. The owner, after work
ing hard all day in his tunnel, takes his
recreation by pounding out tills gold In a
hand mortar and Is making good wages
while "resting."
(
Perry Mine Resumes Work.
It is reported that the Perry mine, near
Baker City, will resume operations soon,
having been Idle for two or three years.
They are now adding a cyanide plant to
the five-stamp mill, and will be ready for
business in a few weeks.
An Expert on Burnt River Minet .
Mining Expert Townsend returned
Monday from a tour of inspection In the
Burnt River district, in the vicinity of
Malheur City. He says that is a wonder
ful gold bearing region, more Interesting
to the scientific student of formations than
to the miner who is out for the gold and
doesn't care how or where the stuff hap
pens to be found. There Is placer gold
everywhere, frequently in paying quanti
ties, but true fissure veins are a rarity.
He says the mines surrounding Sumpter
are the best In the state.
