THE SUMPTER MINER
JOHNS GETS A JOLT.
Violates City Ordinance, Ar
rested on three Charges.
Last Saturday the city physician, Dr.
Brock, received a report through the cus
tomary thannel that there was a case of
contagious disease in the home of Cato
Johns, and that he had not complied with
the city charter regulating such matters.
In company with City Marshal Rand, he
went to the house and found that one of
the children was down with chicken pox,
that the case had not been reported to the
municipal authorities and that no flag was
displayed, both In violation of the ordi
nance.
An hour or so later In the day Cato
Johns met Dr. Brock In front of the post
office and began abusing him for the ac
tion which he had taken; threatening to
assault him physically, and finally did
strike at him, Dr. Brock stepping aside
and avoiding the blow. The city physi
cian had three warrants Issued against
Johns; one for assault, and the other two
for violation of the provisions of the
health ordinance.
When Marshal Rand served the war
rants, Johns announced that he would
have to be taken by force, so says the
officer. It required little force, however,
to take him to the Recorder's office, mere
ly the "laying on of hands." When the
prisoner reached the court room, he ut
tered a tirade of abuse against all the of
ficers concerned, the marshal, attorney
and physician, declaring that if the first
named would remove his badge of office,
'he would proceed to "lick" him. The
star was taken off forthwith, but Johns
-again failed to make good his bluff.
He plead guilty to assault and paid the
line of five dollars Imposed. On the
other two charges, he asked for a contin
uance, so 'hat he could have his brother,
an attorney who lives In Baker City, to
come out and defend him. This was
granted and he was released on his own
recognisance.
The date of his preliminary hearing has
not yet been fixed. City Attorney
Chance went to Hot Lake Sunday. He
Is expectid home tomorrow, when he will
doubtless proceed at once to prosecute the
case. The sentiment of the town Is about
unanimously against Johns In this affair,
as in most everything else he does, and
no one Is In the mood to "stand for" his
unlawful acts. All these officers have
merely done their official duty, with no
malice toward any Individual, and will un
doubtedly be sustained by the municipal
.government and public approval.
Sudden Death of George WUgtod.
Geo. W. Wiegand, the Bourne mer
chant, who went to Arizona last fall In
search of health and who was supposed
by his friends to have partially recovered,
died a few days since In Los Angeles,
California, while en route home. His
wife had received a telegram to meet him
.In the latter city, where he probably Inten
ded to remain a while before coming here,
'but she had only proceeded as far as bak
er City when another message reached
.her of his sudden death. Arrangements
were at once perfected to have his re
-mains expressed to Baker City, where
'they were burled yesterday, the ceremo
nies being conducted under the auspices
.of the Presbyterian church. Mr. Wie
gand was the foremost of Bourne's busi
ness people and had a large circle of Inti
.mate friends who mourn his demise.
