TALK OF THE TOWN
A. L. McEwen returned today from
Baker City.
Clark Tabor, Is home from an all winter
trip to Portland and California.
Bert Start returned yesterday from a
two months trip through the state of
Minnesota, his former home.
Dr. May, of Baker City, was In town
Saturday, called here by Dr. Brock to
consult with him professionally.
Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Bartholf returned
several days since from Hot Lake. Mr.
Bartholf says the waters are all right.
VV. H. Gleason says he has found this
week what he has been looking for during
the past ten years It Is a ledge, of
course.
General Manager Balllle, of the Colum
bia, returned some days since from North
port, Washington, where the big smelter
I s located.
E. I:. Warner left here last week to
visit his former home In northern Nebras
la, and later expects to go on to New
York and other eastern points.
Arnold Lindsay and wife, of Portland,
are guests at the Capital hotel for a day
or two, Mr. Lindsay Is state lecturer for
the order of Maccabees and is also inter
ested in mining.
W. M. Sterling, of the Sumpter Por
warding company, returned a few days
since from (lie Powder river valley, where
he spent a week, going from farm to farm
buying hay and grain, taking everything
i n sight.
The Sumpter Valley Hallway company
will run an excursion train from Baker
City to Whitney Sunday. The announce
ments which appear In the Baker paprrs
say nothing regarding fare or schedule
from Sumpter.
Mrs. George W. Poole and daughter
Clara, of Portland, arrived here yester
day. The visiting ladies are daughter
and granddaughter of Judge and Mr".
W. S. Newbury. They will remain dur
I ng the summer months.
J. C. Illggins, of the Baker City Iron
works, came up last Saturday evening
and Is spendhig this week at the sur
rounding mines, with the result that he
has booked enough business to keep the
shop and foundry busy for some time.
Theodore Glcr, of Oakland, California,
was a visitor here Monday, a guest of
Superintendent Cade, of the Transporta
tion company, who took him through the
mines about Cracker creek. Mr. Gier Is
n large vinyardlst and also does a heavy
wholesale trade in California wines.
Oscar Brandberg and Fred lluott, of
Baker City, are working a promising
claim known as the Gold Leaf, near
Gelser. Their development Is done by

on his way to Baker City yesterday and
will return Priday.
About 350 Odd Fellows came to Sump
ter on the excursion from Baker City
Friday. The train was paid for by the
Baker City lodge, and the visitors were
guests of this city while here. They re
mained only about three hours and every
minute was pleasantly occupied. Sur
prise over the size and solidity of Sumpter
was the almost universal Impression.
Col. Jackson, inspector general of state
militia, arrived In Sumpter Monday to In
spect Troop B, known as the Sumpter
Rough Riders. It was not generally
known that he was to be here at that
time and very few of the cavalrymen were
at the armory when he came. There was
a corporal's guard, however, and they
were sent out to round up the members of
the troop.

Denver, Omaha, Kansas City, St. Louis

Notice of Stockholder' Meeting.
Notice Is hereby given that the annual
meeting of the stockholders of the Inter
mountain Gold Mining company, for the
election of directors and the transaction of
such other business as may come before
the meeting, will be held on Friday, the
)ist day of May, at the office of the com
pany, from nine to ten o'clock a. m. of
aid day, during which time the polls will
be open to receive the ballots of the stock
holders for the election of five directors
for the ensuing year.
