Wednesday, May 22, 1901 THE SUMPTER MINER ' ii, SUNRISE BUYS A CLAIM Secures the Excelsior, Adjoin ing; the Great Ibex. The Sunrise Mining company has bought the Excelsior claim, which adjoins the Great Ibex mine, on Bald mountain. Its boundary line Is within a few feet of the Ibex shaft house. On the Excelsior there Is a four foot vein of free-milling gold ore, that assays sufficiently high even on the surface to pay for mining and milling. As Is known to readers of THE MINER, the Sunset company's other properties, consisting of the Sunrise and Sunset claims, are In the Greenhorn mountains, adjoining the Intermountaln. These claims were located in 1891 by E. J. Hahn, one of the pioneer miners of that district. He has done the assessment work for nine years, which has revealed a ledge of very rich ore, characteristic of that district, being almost identical with that found In the Cayuse claim, of the Intermountaln group. Where it Is exposed in the open cut, being practically on the sur face, there Is eighteen inches of ore that averages $60 to the ton, the values being In silver and gold. The Sunrise company is being financed and managed by Seymour Bell and W. C. Calder, and so successful have they been that the treasury has an ample fund for development purposes, which work will be commenced as soon as the snow goes off the high Greenhorns, the latter part of June, and will be continued unin terruptedly until a mine is made of the splendid prospects. The trail which now runs to the property from the Intrinsic mine, distant one mile, can be converted Into a wagon road at a cost of about $250, which will be done this summer. Mr. Bell says his hobby in mining Is to take the gold out of the ground Instead of from the pockets of eastern stockholders a mere whim, some will say and with this idea In view, he will put In a matting smelter as soon as enough ore is blocked out to Insure a continuous run. Half of the capital stock of the Sunrise Mining company, 500,000 shares, has been placed in the treasury, Insuring plenty of money to put up the plant. Camp Creek Placers. Al Hlllter and Doctor Fisher came In from their Camp creek placers, twelve miles south of Sumpter, between the Gimlet and Wlntervllle diggings. Sup plies for this camp was the object of their visit to town and they returned loaded yesterday. Dave Copping, who Is Doc tor Fishet's partner In the placers, is also working there and all expect to keep busy until the middle of July, though ground sluicing can be carried on the entire year If desired, having sufficient water for that purpose. Placer miners are all jubilant this season over the large flow of water and some heavy clean-ups will be reported at the end of the season. Development of the Dredge In Mining. The development of the dredge Is one of the most interesting Incidents of placer mining. The present elaborate machines, each of which costs from 925,000 to Hi,' 000, had their origin In New Zealand, and the first dredge was nothing more than a stout Iron ring, know as a "spoon" to which was attached an oxhide bag and a long pole. A rope was attached to the ring and secured to a winch on the bank of the river. The ring and pole were then taken out In the river with a boat and dropped In the stream. The bucket was pressed by the pole as deep as possi ble Into the wash in the bed of the river, and then hauled ashore with the winch and the contents of the bucket washed In a California rocker. The most marked success of the dredge in this country is in California, where a dredge operator re ports that last year he handled 320,000 cubic yards of material which yielded 15 cents per yard at a cost of 5 cents per yard. This In round numbers means the handling of 1,000 cubic yards at a profit of $ 1000 Mining and Engineering Review. Will Work the Old Sanger Again. The old Sanger mine, in the eastern part of Union county, that has a record for producing over $1,000,000 worth of bullion, but which has not been operated for a number of years until recently, is again In the foreground. It recently passed Into the hands of a new, company which Is developing the property under the superlntendency of J. K. Romig, and the ledges are said to be showing up as well as In former years, and it is quite evident that the mine, which already has 20 men on its payroll, will soon have a large force at work and the camp of San ger again becomes the scene of the great activity that prevailed there years ago. It Is reported that during the past few days a new ledge has been struck that Is very rich and shows evidence of being a large deposit of ore. Only development work is now being done, but it is not im probable the ten stamp mill will be put In operation In the near future. Union Re publican. MAP GIVEN AWAY.
