Wednesday, May 15, 1901 THE SUMPTER MINER S & SANGER LEDGE PICKED UP. After Running Through a Fault 215 Feet in Length. After cutting through a fault of 21$ feeS the old Sanger ledge has been picked up again, rich as ever, and so far as de veloped, as wide as on the other side of the fault. Last wlnt r this property was taken In bond from the Bradley estate, of Mil waukee, by a company of Washington people, who placed it in charge of J. K. Romlg, superintendent of the Maxwell mine. Mr. Romlg first had the property pumped out, and then laid his plans for development. Advice was plentiful. Some thought the only way to get values from the Sanger was to go on the other side of the hill, and enter It down near Eagle ireek, that the water might be drawn off and a tunnel proposition be had instead of the shaft. It now appears that depth was not sought. Mr. Romlg had a model made of the mine, carefully noting the surface proportions of the fault. From this he made his underground surveys, figuring at what angle he would have to turn on the 4oofoot level to reach the ledge on the other side of the fault. So accurately did he figure this out that Instead of strik ing the ledge at 220 feet, he found It at2is. It was tapped only three days ago, and has not been crosscut entirely yet. A width of six feet has been made through It, with the other wall showing up. Ore is rich, from all Indications. It is esti mated there is 600 feet of the ledge open to development, which, cut at a depth of 400 feet, and if it averages six feet in width, will give an immense body of ore. A force of 20 miners is employed and about 15 woodcutters. Increases will be made In the working force soon, and about July the io-stamp mill on the prop erty will be opened. The battery of this mill Is In good condition, but new vanners will have to be put in. Great Interest is created throughout the "Sanger district by the strike. For a long time the Sanger has been Idle, as the for mer operator drove for the ledge but mis calculated In the fault, and did not ap proach the ore nearer than 10 feet. A rich shoot of ore has been struck In the Whitaker group, near the Sanger mine. A force of men are driving on the ledge, the tunnel now being in 300 feet. At this point some very rich ore Is being taken out, going high in free-milling gold. The tunnel Is now gaining depth rapidly, and as the ore shoot Improves In depth, the owners are Sanguln of a good proper ty. Special to the Telegram from Baker City. Cattlemen Organize Against Rustlers. A stock association was recently organ ized In the Middle Fork country to which nearly every cattle man of Ritter and Dale and a large number from Long Creek belong. The officers are: George McPherson, president, and V. B. Peter son, secretary. Every cattleman In that section complains of having lost quite a number of cattle In the past as a result of being driven from the range or stolen outright. This they Intend to put a stop to. The members of the association will meet again the last Saturday of May and will employ three men at a salary of $75 per month to ride the range during the months of June, July, August and Sep tember, and keep a close watch after the cattle of all members of the association. The step taken by the cattlemen of the Middle Fork Is proper and should be fol lowed by a similar organization In every section of Grant county. The stock lost each season by cattle owners will more than pay the expenses of the organiza tion. Blue Mountain Eagle. Hones For Sale. Several good saddle and pack horses for sale. Apply to H. W. B.
