y 4 THE SUMPTER MINER Wednesday, May 15, 1901 OUR INDIAN NAMES. "They arc on Our Waters; We Cannot Wash Them Out." The attention of official purists who are endeavoring to preserve In their orig inal melody the Indian names of this country Is directed to the name Chewelah, a town In Stevens county, Washington. Rev. Cushlng Hells, the pioneer mission ary, who came to this state In 1838, and heard the word from the Indian tongue more thnn 60 years ago, always pronoun ced It Cha-we-lah. The same authority confirmed the pop ular explanation of the origin of the name Coeur d'Alene. Literally it Is French for "heart of awl." The early French trap per found these Indians cunning In trade and bestowed a name conveying that sig nificance In early days the Spokane river be tween the lake and the Columbia, was known as the Coeur d'Alene Instead of the Spokane, the latter name being then confined to the Little Spokane. In "As toria," Washington Irvln Imparts the In formation that the Astor posts were at Astoria, the mouth of the Okanogan, and the continence of the Spokane and Point ed Heart rivers th.it Is, where the Little Spokane runs Into the Spokane. When Astor was driven out of this country, this post fell into the hands of the British, and there the Hudson Hay company long maintained a trading post. The falls of the Spokane and the ad jacent valley were a favorite resort for the Indians in this section. They gathered here In winter, because here the snow first disappeared and afforded them grass for their gaunt ponies, and In the spring and summer they found line fishing at the falls and at the mouth of Latah creeks, which they called the Sin-too too-ooles. The best thing about the American In dian Is his language. It Is regular In its construction, governed by well defined laws, melodious mid capable of fine con struction; not the coarse patois of Chi nook, which was made to order for the practical affairs of barter, but the original languages, which have their poetic traces upon our rivers and mountains, In spite of the prosaic efforts of our pioneers to sub stitute names that would often turn the loftiest poetry Into broad humor. "Their names are on our waters, we cannot wash them out." Spokesman-Review. Blue Jacket Will Resume Operations.
