Till: dally edition of the Raker City
Herald came nut Monday evening. If re
ports be true, the Herald had even more
than the tiMi.il first Ismic hard likk. It is
said th it two forms, containing the tele
Kraph report, were pleJ, hut no apologies
were made in Its columns Tuesday, nor
weir any needed.
I.A1 1: dispatches report the detection of
lunch Irand in the commissary department
nl the nrmv at .M.inlla, ns a necessary ad
junct to riotous living of oltictrs. In this,
history is merely repeating itself. It has
silwuvs heen a part of colonial and carpel'
Pag mle ol a conquered territory, since
the days ol Pontius Pilate to the present
time.
THAI Is something worth working for,
the securing of the trade ot an agiLultural
neighborhood with a thrifty population ol
one thousand. It will he seen from the
story published In another column of I III:
MINIIR today that this can beaccompllshed
by the construction ol a road. Sumpter
business men ought not to neglect this
oppoituulty.
AND now It Is slated that ovslug to a
cletical ciioi In the bill providing lor the
nuue.xatlim el the Panhandle to liaker
lountv, the object ol that me.tsuie will
probably not be attained. It is repotted
that the line ot segregation as IndiiUted in
the bill does not cut otf the territory which
it was the intention ol the promoters of
the enterprise to amies to this county.
IN Kansas City Mrs. Nation was ar
rested 011 a charge of obstructing the
streets, and was run out of town by a
f 500 line, imposed by the mint. Judge
McAuley Mated ftom the bench that
"Missouri atmosphere is not adapted to
long-haired men and short haired women. "
Mis. Nation Is a failute, even as a sensa
tion, every where e.xcept In Kansas, where
they bleed all kinds ot human freaks.
IT IS very evident tioiu the Washington,
I). C, dispaUh published in another col
umn ot I III: MIM:I tod iy, that Geologist
Hngreii, who surveyed the eastern Ore
gon gold lirKIs last summer, was most
lavoiably Imptessed with this region as a
gold pioduicr. lie says plainly that the
mines In (lie Sumpter distiictaieof greater
peimaneme than elsewhere, and ale ot
coutse mole valuable. Gold and copper
are the two minerals that will pay to mine,
silver deposits being ol little Importance
and 110 commercial value.
SINCE martial law has been abolished
over in the Coer d'Alenes, the disorderly
element has resumed its reign of terror.
Two men have been killed within a week
and it Is said that threats have been made
that all who worked against the dyna
miters aie on the list for a general killing.
Many people have entertained the Idea
that the Federal government dealt harshly
witli the striking miners of that section,
but unless they change their tactics, they
will be without public sympathy entirely,
when they will be sure to "gel their
draw."
It Is reported among Wall street men
that the visit of J. P. Morgan to Europe
has something to do with the Interests of
Mexico. It Is salJ that President Diaz
has commissioned the New York financier
to sound powerful foreign Interests upon
the plans that may lead to the establish
ment of a new financial policy for Mexico
"even a movement along conservative
lines towards the establishment of the
gold standard," says the innocent looking
press dispatch. If Morgan has Diaz in
his power, It is for the purpose of estab
lishing the gold standard, and nothing
else except the Inevitable results.
FROM New York comes the informa
tion that theStandard Oil Interests during
the last year have employed an engineer
corps which has been engaged In the In
vestigation in every district In every
state of the Union believed to contain cop
per deposits In anv large amounts. This
activity, according to current Wall street
reports, was associated with apian for the
complete unification of the copper Interests
of the country, Including the development
of southern copper property. The buoy
ancy of Amalgamated and Anaconda on
the stock exchaugi and the strength of
Union copper stocks were referred to as
suggestive of impending plans of the
Standard Oil Interests. Together with
this report came the statement that the
control of the United Coppet Mining com
pany, with its North Carolina properties,
would be shortly announced as having
passed to the Standard Oil.
