Numerous open cuts, adits, tunnels and cross country trenches thoroughly prospect the width and value of the ledges. Pan samples taken from various test pits on the surface, never fail to yield a fine pros pect in free gold, the assay value giving as high as $2.16 per ton in gold. The Strassburg group, which adjoins the t Libkrty Bell on the north and east, in driv ing a cross cut to tap their main lead at a depth of 500 feet, have cut two blind ledges 14 and 19 feet in width only 1 jo feet from our side line, coursing southwest through three of the Libkrty Bkll claims. Hurt, Secretary HARNEY COUNTY WEALTH. Rich Placers, Extensive Copper Field and. Immense Borax Deposits. The mineral resources of Harney county have as yet received but very little atten tion from any source. In the northern part of the county a few placers are worked a short time In the spring during the run of water, which hardly ever holds out longer than a month. In this time the clean up on each claim will bring the one or two men working it from $300 to t 1000. The operators of these claims turn this money into a "grub stake" to push the work on the respective quartz ledges lo cated in the same neighborhood. While nothing has been struck here yet to create an excitement, the prospects continue to be encouraging, and there are a number of miners who have an unbounded faith as to the future of the section. In the southern part of the county Is the Pueblo mining district. This section just now is receiving considerable attention on account of the indications of immense cop per deposits. The prospect work on a number of properties is being pushed with very satisfactory results. Evidence of other minerals is shown. Miners in other sections of the country are beginning to hear of the camp and are finding their way there. Before the end of another season, news of a good strike is likely to be her alded from this section. Just north of the Pueblo district are ex tensive deposits of borax which have been opened with great success, and have been worked for several years by the Rose Val ley Borax company. The company has large and costly works upon the ground for refining the product and preparing it (or market. The output is hauled to Winnemucca, Nevada, a distance of over 100 mil.-s, by freight teams, from which point It is shipped be rail. Two large is mule teams, carrying 20,000 pounds each, ike regular bi-weekly trips from the works to the railroad all the year round. The borax company Is one of the best pay ing concerns In eastern Oregon. Harney Valley Items. Badger Will Soon Ship Regularly. Seventy-five thousand pounds of ore were shipped last week from the Badger mine, near Susanvllle, to the Selby Smel ter in San Francisco. This property is making regular shipments, when the roads permit, since the California man agement has taken hold of it. Mr. Selby, of the Smelter company, Is the principal owner, and ores turned out are taken di rect to his smelter. High values are re quired to justify the long haul by wagon trom the Badger to Sumpter, and thence from Sumpter by rail. The desirability of the Badger ores foi smelling has been tested often. The mere fact that Mr. Selby secured the property after handling the ores in his reduction works Is suffi dent evidence that he found in them big values. The Basche Hardware company, of Sumpter, handles the ore for the com pany. Regular monthly shipments will be made as soon rs roads are In condition for uninterrupted freighting. Milton Eagle.
