Wednesday, March 6, 1901 THE SUMPTER MINER GREAT MINES HERE. And They Arc Being Rapidly Developed. J. G. McGuigan, superintendent of the Alamo, In the Red Boy district, Oregon, is in the city to confer with the officers of that company regarding the further de velopment of the property and the erec tion of a stamp mill thereon. Mr. McGuigan says that the eastern Oregon gold fields are showing up some remarkable properties, both In the size of the leads and the richnesss of the ore. He says that extensive development has been quietly carried on In the district during the winter, many prospects having ad vanced prist that stage to a point whereat a stamp mill is justified. "Machinery for the Quebec, located near us, is being hauled on (lie ground," said he "On my way out from the mine I saw nine carloads of machinery at Sumpter for the different mining proper ties of the district. Resides the Quebec four other 10 stamp mills will be erected In that district this summer. They will be put up by the Oregon-Colorado com pany, Strassberg, Concordand Alamo. "Many new mills have been erected during the winter, some of which are commencing operations. The 2s ton Bryan mill on the Mammoth had Its first cleanup in January, the ore averaging 2o per ton. A 2o-stnmp mill started last weel on the Bald Mountain. The Red Boy mili cleanup for January was 550,000, this being the highest for any month since the mill has been in operation. The ore is steadily Increasing In value in the Red Boy, that now being milled coming from a level at depth of from 500 and 600 feet. The machinery on the Red Boy Is now almost ready to commenc sinking to the 2000 foot level, at which depth the company has decided to thoroughly ex plore the property. "The recent strike on the Bonanza shows a 16 foot ledge running not less than $100 to the ton. The Sumpter Val ley railroad has been extended to within ten miles of the Alamo and will be in op eration In tile early spring. Referring to the Alamo Mr. McGulgan said: "The mine has passed the pros pect stage. My business In Spokane Is to lay before the directors the plans for further development of the property and , the erection of a 10 stamp mill. Our present work Is In a tunnel being run on the lead, work on which Is being pushed rapidly, making an average of five leet per day. "We are In 265 feet, having crosscut our lead and drifted thereon 65 feet. The lead Is 30 feet wide and exceptionally well defined, with from eight to sixteen Inches of talc on each wall. We will con tinue to drift on the lead under our old workings with which we will connect at a depth of 300 feet. "The lead in the old workings showed twenty feet wide between walls. At our present depth it shows thirty fe.'t wide, being a solid body of quartz averaging clear across at the most conservative esti mate f 10 per ton In free gold. Many speci mens show gold visible to the naked eye. We expect to make connections with our old workings by May 1, when the main working tunnel will be commenced to con nect with all uppir workings, giving a total depth of 800 feet. "This, tunnel will land all the ore ex tracted from the mine at our mlllslte, where the construction of a io-stamp mill will be commenced at the same time the tunnel is started. This main working tunnel will follow the lead clear under our upper workings. The company owns an adjoining claim upon which a parallel lead extends 575 ft st of the Alamo lead. This lead is ten feet wide on tht surface and averages in free gold fiope ton clear across. This lead will be tap ped by a crosscut from the main tunnel on the Alamo claim and I expect it to be ei)uall as large and equally as rich in lvalues at that depth as is the Alamo lead." Spokesman-Review. I Handsome Mining Machinery Catalogue. The MINER has received Section 2 of I the 1001 catalogue issued by the Edward , P. Allis company, manufacturers of min ing machinery, with main offices at Mil- , waukee, and branch agencies all over the continent, the most direct one to this par ticular field being at Spokane, where H. V. Croll Is its manager. The catalogue in question Is one of the most complete and elaborately illustrated affairs ever seen here and should be in every mining company's office, as no doubt they can be by application to the Edward P. Allis company, either at Milwaukee, Wis., or Spokane.
