MINES TRIBUTARY TO GRANITE v
Colonel Carpenter Says They Are the Best
in the United States.
"The section of country around Granite
will be the b;st mining district in this
part of the United States as soon as It is
firoperlydeveloped," declared Colonel
Carpenter, an old miner, In the lobby of
the Esmond hotel today.
"I am not speaking altogether of hear
say, as I have spent a number of years
In the vicinity of Granite! and have been
working on one claim for 26 years. A
good deal of work Is being done now and
work will continue to be done. The best
mine in Oregon is the Red Boy. They
have a 20 stamp mill, and are running
night and day. They are now engaged
In putting in hoisting machinery, which
will give them the largest hoisting plant
in the West. By this means they will be
able to go down about 2000 feet. Al
ready their work has cost them over f too,
000. This has been a producing mine for
four years. They are about ready to sink
a shaft, but at the present time are mill
ing from a tunnel, and will until the next
shaft is down to ore. There is ore near
the surface, but it is better further dovn.
There are several good prospects, out that
Is the only mill In the vicinity.
"The Cougar mine, which Is near Gran
ite, Is closed down at the (present time,
and I understand the owners are negoti
ating for the sale of the property. This
mine Is owned by Spokane people. There
are two other mills, also near Granite, but
they are closed down for want of capital.
These are the May Queen and the Mag
nolia. "What do we need mostly? Capital
and men who will develop the country.
The gold is there all right, and all we
need Is to have it taken from the ground.
Some day we will startle Portland and
the rest of the world." Telegram.
Splendid Ore Samples From QuarUburg.
Two handsome specimens of the rich
ore from the mine of the Standard Gold
and Sliver Mining company on Dixie
creek, seven miles north of Prairie City,
were brought down from the mine yester
day by J. I:. Batchelder. One of them
was sent to the National museum at
Washington, D. C, and the other was
presented to the Chamber of Commerce
exhibit. These specimens assay over
f 300 to the ton, about f 100 in gold, a little
silver, and the remainder cobalt. This Is
the only mine on the coast, if not the
only one in the country, which is turning
out straight cobalt ore. Cobalt is a rare
mineral. It is used In glazing pottery,
and the oxide is used in making purple
dyes and colors. A small specimen of the
ore was sent to the National museum
some time ago, and a request came back
for a larger piece of the same ore. Super
intendent Dosch was much pleased to se
cure the handsome specimen presented to
the exhibit in his charge, and considers it
one of the rarest of his mineral exhibits.
