Wednesday, February 6, 1401 THE SUMPTER MINER GREAT ISOLATED EMPIRE. Average Wealth of Every Harney County Citizen Is $3000. Southeastern Oregon Is the best place on earth for homeseekers to go, in the opinion of Georne W. Hayes, register of the United States land office at Rums, Harney county. "We have 9,500,000 acres of public lands open for settlement," he said yesterday, at the Perkins, "and one-fifth of this area is Reed agricultural soil. The whole vast region Is excellent pasture land and is now supporting great numbers of cattle, horses and sheep. "We have one valley 65 miles long by 30 miles in width which Is so level that one can drive fur fully 65 miles along its length without reaching an elevation of 2$ feet. The soil produces well, without Irrigation, and water can be found at u depth of eight feet over nearly the whole surface ol the valley. If Irrigation were resorted to, an abundance of water could be stored in the adjacent mountains with the aid of well located dams. "Although this valley has an elevation of 4 444 feet above sea level, fruits and vegetables are raised in the hi;!ie.t per fection, wlille the wheat grown in the val ley makes the best quality of Hour. V had a country fair at Hums last fall, and I was surprised at the splendid exhibit of apples and prunes, as well as of the com mon varieties of vegetables. "The people of Harney county are the wealthies per capita of any portion of Oregon, as we havr but 3,000 persons within Its boundaries, while our assessed valuation Is $1,000,000. This would al low each inhabitant 3000 were the prop erly divided up equally. "The great drawback to the settlement of the region Is lack of railroad facilities, as the O. R. & N. Is the nearest line to Burns and that is 150 miles away. There ate three railroads projected, however the Dalles Southern, Corvallls and East ern and the Sumpter Valley, and when either of these reaches us, Portland will begin to regain much of the trade she has lost by the Wlimemucca route, which draws a large business southward toward California. It would be to Portland's In terest to have these roads extend into Harney county and it would also be bet te: for our people because it would give us cheaper rates to the seabord." Ore gonlau. O. R. & N. 1$ Oregon'! Only MPoh Club." The O. R. & N. recently Issued 230,000 copies of a 32-page folder on 'The Gold Fields of Eastern Oregon," which Is now being distributed all over the United States and Canada. Sixteen pages are devoted to descriptive matter, and the remainder to thj best maps of the region yet made. The company has also closed a contract for the printing of 50,000 copies of Its brochure on "Oregon, Washington and Idaho," revised and brought up to date. The major portion of the descriptive mat ter that has appeared in the eastern pa pers for four years past has been taken from this book. The book will contain about too pages, with fully thirty pages of half tones. While furthering its own Interests, the O. R. & N. is a pretty good "push club" for Oregon. Portland Daily Mall. A Factor in Transcontinental Travel. No one crossing the continent can afford to cut Salt Lake city from his route. The attractions of the place, Including the Mormon Temple, Tabernacle and church institutions, the great Salt Lake deader and denser than the Dead sea in the Holy Land the picturesque environment and the warm sulphur and hot springs, are greater to the square yard than any local ity on the American continent. The Rio Grande Western railway, connecting on the east with the Denver and Rio Grande and Colorado Midland railways, and on the west with the Southern Pacific (Cen tral route) and Oregon Short Line, is the onlytranscontinent.il line passing directly through Salt Lake City. The route through Salt Lake Citv via the Rio Grande Western railway Is famous all the year round. On account of the equitable cli mate of Utah and Colorado, it is just as popular in winter as In summer. Send 2c to J. D. Mansfield, 253 Washington street, Portland, or George W.
