About The Sumpter miner. (Sumpter, Or.) 1899-1905 | View Entire Issue (Feb. 6, 1901)
Wednesday, February 6, 1901 THE SUMPTER MINER SPOKANE MAN'S VIEWS Sumpter the Ideal District for Mining. John R. Cassln and W. R. Elsenhour have just returned from the eastern Ore gon gold fields. While there they, with J. G. McGulgan, superintendent of the Alamo, and W. H. Jackson, formerly superintendent of the Golconda and now superintendent of the California Consoll dated Mining company, made an exam (nation of the Alimo Consolidated Mining and Milling Company's property. This is located one and a quarter miles from the town of Alamo and within three quar ter nf a mile of the Red Hov. 20 miles west of umpter. 1 ne examination was maue wiiu a view to determine the advisability of erecting a stamp mill on the property. The Alamo Is recognized as one of the best free mill ing gold properties In the Sumpter dis trict, and is pronounced to be a similar property to the ReJ Roy, but it is said to have larger leads carrying higher values, almost entirely free milling. 1 he prop erty consists of five claims owned by the Alamo Consolidated Mining and Milling company, the stock In which Is chiefly owned in Spokane. John G. McUuigan, the veteran Slocan miner, is superintend ent, and has developed the property by 615 feet of tunnels, winzes and drifts, dis closing a shoot of ore recently reported to be 20 feet wide at a depth of 1 $0 feet. A drift has been run on the ore 150 feet and a raise made to the surface. The ore body is crosscut at Intervals, showing regular ly 20 feet wlde.pannlng free gold through out and showing free gold to the naked eye. The entire body of ore so far ex posed averages 917 to the ton, according to Mr. Cassln. As a result of the examination Mr. Cas ln states that a 2o-stamp mill will be erected and work thereon will commence in May. Work at present is being pushed on a tunnel at the rate of 3 1 2 feet per day. This tunnel will tap the lead about March 1 at a depth of 350, feet when an other level will be started, which will give a depth on the lead of 800 feet. "I waM much pleased with the Alamo mine and the district in general," said Mr. Cassln. "It was my first visit to the eastern Oregon gold fields, and as usual I found many Spokane men among the successful ones. 1 believe the greater part of the wealth of the district will come to Spokane, because of the energy and push displayed by Spokane men now in the field. "It is an Ideal mining country, the cen ter of operation being but a few hours tide from the railroad and with splendid roads everywhere. Placer diggings are found in almost every gulch of the streams, which with the best dredging fa cilities will require many years to work out. I doubt if there is a district on the continent with as many producing mines, and yet quartz mining Is only In Its In fancy. "A special feature of the district is the splendidly built and well equipped mills and mining plants and the air of solidity and independence that prevails among the mine owners. As gold cithers on the plates, the owners of these rich producing mines care not whether the knowledge of the richness of their property reaches the ' notice of the outside woild. Twenty five stamp mills, aggregating over 350 stamps, are working in the district. As an ex ample of the rapid development and ap preciation In value of mining property in the Sumpter district, inquiry elicited the follow ing facts: A few years ago the Bo nanza mine was offered for f$oo. Its present valuation Is 1,5000 ,000. The Red Boy was offered for 1.500, and is now held at 3,000,000. The North Pole was offered for $3,000 and is said to be worth Si, 500,000. The Columbia was offered for 1 4,000 and is worth ft, 500,000. The Golconda was offered for 700 and Is now a $1,500,000 mine. The Cougar was offered for $1,500 and the present price is $2,000,000. The E. & E. was sold for $10,000. It has a record of over $000,000 as a product, and Is now out of the market. The Imperial was sold for $3,000 and is valued at $300,000. These, with no doubt many others not brought to my attention, show the substantial growth of the min ing industry of the Sumpter district. "In this marvelous district are many other properties that within the past two years have been developed from prospects Into mines, among which are the Ibex, Bald Mountain, Magnolia, Little Giant, Bell of Baker, Bunker HIII.DIadem, Con cord, Quebec, Strassburg,Scaudla, Coeur d'Alene, Minneapolis, Keystone Bell, Gypsy Queen, baby McKte, Morning Star, Crown Point, Red Chief and many others. "I consider the district Spokane terri tory and hope to see many more nf the meritorious properties there in the hands of Spokane people." Spokesman-Review. LAST PAYMENT ON IRON DYKE.
