Wednesday, January jo, 1901 THE SUMPTER MINER 11 RICH COLUMBIA CONCENTRATES. Twenty Tons Worth $50,000, Average Values. Two of the most valuable carloads of ore ever brought to Baker City over the Sumpter Valley railway were those arriv Ing here on Wednesday evening and ship ped from the Colubia mine. Frank S. Balllle, manager of the Col umbia Mining company, accompanied the cars to this city and had the ore sampled by the Baker City Sampling works, which gave a return of over 50,000. There were twenty tons in all, ten tons to the car, that being the capacity of the cars of the Sumpter Valley railway. Mr. Baillie, aftr the;sampllng In this citv. forwarded the ore over the O. R. & N. to the smelter at Everett, Washington. I rr nf cttrU u-ilno i title frnm tlio Ure 01 SUCH Value as llllS iroin l" Columbia Is truly wonderful and gives .,,,,. , . ... ... . . The state ment in the Republican, that this ship ment was literally alive with the "yellow metal," was a combination of ignorance and dishonesty. It is not necessary to send free gold ore to a smelter for treat ment. The other point on which the Democrat was in error, Is the Impression conveyed that this was an unusually rich shipment. Manager Balllle says the concentrates from the Columbia mill averages about as this lot does, 52,500 to the ton. Speaking of this matter, a mining man well posted on the big properties in this district, stated to a MINER representative that the Columbia is the most valuable and best managed mine In the state.
