That Townsite Now Reads
Its Title Clear.
After a most aggravating delay ths
long expected United States patent to the
townsite of Granite has at last been is
sued and the town will now advance with
a rapidity that will be astonishing.
Tuesday morning about 9 o'clock Mayor
Thornburg received the glad tidings by
'phone from Hon. E. W. Bartlett, register
of the United States land office at La
Grande, that a patent had been Issued
and the papers had been received at the
land office and would be forwarded to the
parties in Interest at once.
It had been known here for two weeks
that the patent would be Issued within a
few days, as George Barrett received a
letter at that time from Hon. Blnger Her
mann, commissioner of the general land
office at Washington, saying that he was
using his utmost endeavors to have the
patent issued without further delay.
This Is Indeed pleasing news to our peo
ple, who have been greatly handicapped
owing to this apparently unnecessary de
lay. A large amount of capital has been
awaiting Investment In Granite until this
patent was Issued, among which are t$o
000 for a first class electric light and power
plant, a $50,000 smelter, a f 50,000 foun
dry and machine shops, a 10,000 brew
ery, and scores of other business enter
prises that will be put In here within the
next few months, all of which will be In
running order by the time the Hilgard
Granite railroad is completed Into Gran
ite, which the stockholders assure us will
not be later than November 1st of next
year. Gem.
UGrande Land Office All Right.
Ex-Governor A. H. Burke, one of the
inspectors for the land offices of the entire
United States, who has been here for some
days inspecting (lie land office, took his
departure yesterday. The distinguished
gentleman found everything In excellent
condition at this office, was highly pleased
with his visit, and paid the officers and
employees here the highest compliment
possible, and congratulated them upon the
highly satisfactory and neat manner in
which the tool and papers of the office
were kept. LaGrande Chronicle.
