Wednesday, December 19, 1900 THE SUMPTER MINER z' CALDER ON THE TRAIL Starts Out to Dispense Inform ation About Sumpter. W. C. Calder expects to leave today or tomorrow for the co.it, remaining a month or more on Puget bound, and then proceed to New York. This Is a mission ary tour exclusively. He goes In the In terest of Sumpter and this minium district ;tnd he rocs loaded for bear, too; so will waste very little time In Portland. Mr. Cnlder will carry with him consid erable literature regarding the gold fields eastern Oregon, prominent among which, of course, will be many hundred copies of THE MIN12R. He will also have with him some average samples of ores from the various districts, with which to back up his printed and spoken bouquets tosed at this favored region. And speaking of ores, lie will of course not neglect to let the people know that there is such a mine In these parts as the Inter-Mountain in which he is heavily In terested. He has prepared an exhibit of this rock th.it Is very attractive and con vincing. A half dozen samples have been roasted in an ordinary blacksmith forge, which process has driven numberless gold ind silver beads to the surface, the char acter of which is easily detected by the naked eye, trotn the colors., yellow and white. Information from this property continues very encouraging. The tunnel now being driven on the ledge loo feet below the old workipgs is in 57 feet, in ore the entire distance. The lowest assay obtained in this drift was 513.62. From that small figure, v.i I ues run up as high as a couple of thousand. Mr. Calder says he can produce any desired quantity of samples assaying fiooo, and can supply Si 00 rock by the ton. There is now about an even 1 100,000 worth of oie blocked out. Green Grau on Emigrant Creek. John Garrett, the veteran stockman of E migrant creek, Is in town from his moun tain ranch. He reports that everything in the mountains Is in splendid condition; that stock is fat, grass green and grow ing, and the winter, thus far, all that could be desired. Mr. Garrett had the misfortune of a runaway while coming In, occasioned by a mule he was driving re fusing to recognize a Hag of truce borne by a wayside dog under the alias of a tail. No damage was done, but the mule, when seen by a reporter on Wednesday afternoon, still refused to submit quietly to the presence of such canines as came his way. Harney County News. Keystone-Bell Tunnel in 700 Feet. Rutland, superintended of the property.whlch Is owned by Captain C.H. Thompson, Albert Geiser, F. J. Conroy, Clark Tabor and others. The group con ists of seven claims and is considered very valuable one. Corner Potts on Placer Claims. It has been repeatedly held of late years by the land department, and asserted by the courts, that where placer claims are held by legal subdivisions, all the corners of the claim must be marked on the ground by substantial monuments and stakes; and that failure to do this invalidates the location.if anyone having an opposing in terest chooses to contest it. But it is not required that stakes should be placed at the corners of every 2o-acre plot. Monu uments are only required on those corners which are indicated as corners In the land track book, and at the intersection of lines with streams that are meandered. Baker City Herald.
