GRAHAM BAKER CITY or SUMPTER TELEPHONE BLACK 891 SPIRIT "TIPPED OFF" LOST MINE Utah Paper Relates the Incident Without Winking an Eye. Special correspondence to Salt Lake Herald from Moab, Utah, under date of December 7, says: News of the discov ery on December 1, of old Spanish mine workings in the Blue mountains of San Juan county, sixtyfive miles south of here, has just reached Moab. E. H. Ryan, of Moab, formerly county attorney of San Juan county, has returned from Mon tlcello, where he went last week on legal business and saw the parties connected with the find and personally saw the evi dences of their discovery and what the lo cators followed In working up the discov ery. Mr. Ryan tells the follewing: On Sunday, December 2, he was writ ing in the county clerk's office at Monti cello, when a boy came In and wanted a location certificate, and received it, and a little later returned with the blank filled out in pencil and requested Mr. Ryan to make a copy in ink for record. Some thing In the boy's action and the descrip tion of the location caused Mr. Ryan to think there was something unusual in this location, and also the fact that the boy was a stranger in that section, and mining locations being unusual there at this time of year. Inquiry brought out the information that the boy was camped with his father and sister near Montkello. Mr. Ryan went to the camp and found A. J. Strouse and daughter, aged about 10 years. Mr. Strouse stated that he formerly lived at Morrison, Colorado, but lately at Dolores, Colorado. That for years he had been a believer in spiritual ism and that for a number of years he had receivedcommunlcations from the spirit of his dead brother, generally regarding min ing information. That forsome time past he has known that the spirit had an im portant message to deliver to him, but could get nothing of a definite nature, ex cept that he wanted him to come to south western Colorado or southeastern Utah. At last he asked the spirit if there was anyone through whom he could com municate definite Information, and was told yes. He then asked the name of the member of the family and received no for an answer, until he asked if it was the young daughter, and was told it was. A slate and pencil was brought and the girl at once commenced to write, and a route he was told to take was described in the minutest detail, distance, watering places and conditions of the roads. The spirit said tint at a point described he would find the Josephine mine, worked by the Spanish about 300 years ago, and who were finally driven (out by the In dians. It was described that he would find some pole picks in the tunnel he would uncover. That at one time a fight took place at the mine between the Span ish and the Indians and the Indian chief was killed. The spirit also told that the mine would produce him a large amount of wealth; that he would start the work with ten men and finally work eighty men and that the mine would finally pro duce him f 185,000a month; that he would find the old workings to be a tunnel thirty feet high and fifteen feet wide. Mr. Strouse left Dolores immediately Wednesday, November 28 and following the route described, came to a point about six miles from Montkello on the south slope of the Blue mountains and about one and a half mile from the saw mlll.and found the place Indicated, where he began to dig, and soon uncovered the mouth of an old tunnel that had been carefully cov ered over. He uncovered a large flat stone covering the entrance and found the opening, with everything as the spirit's description gave It. He was satisfied that he had found what was wanted. He came at once to Montkello to put his discovery on record and this was the location Mr. Ryan had filled out. Famous. HOP GOLD BEER STAR BREWING COMP'Y.
