GRIZZLY STOCK Affords an opportunity for profitable investment that cannot be equaled in the Sumpter District. The mine is now being actively operated and has reached a degree of development practically assuring the stability of the mine. The ledge, carrying high values in gold, copper and silver, is over 40 feet in width. Work is being rapidly pushed, tunnelling and sinking on the ledge, blocking out ore and adding to the pay dumps, and it may be expected that the mine will be a producer and the company a dividend payer at an early date. Every dollar realized by the company from the sale of treasury stock is being used for improving the property. The sale of stock will be con tinued until the mine is a producer,. As development progresses the price of stock will be advanced. Secure this stock now at 10 cents. That it will be worth its par value within 12 months is a conservate es timate. Subscriptions for stock may be sent to the company direct, or to the First Bank cf Sumpter, Sumpter, Ore. Pure iridium is alloyed with platinum to make the closing faces ot hreech blocks for modern artillery, this compound being the only tiling that will stand the corrosion of the gases and the enormous heat about 4000 degrees centi grade. At thr i.ilr 11I fi per tioy miner, gold is worth neatly fjs a pound, platinum is only Moo. It, though, you were thr forluiiatr pos srssiu ol a lump ol platinum eo,ual in bulk to a pound ot gold, thrsllveiy look ing lump would be worth not $100, but H7S. for platinum, if not thr ileatest, is thr heaviest thing on r.utli. I htrr times as mstly and practically as heavy Is that woudeilul metal iridium, Known to Ihr usris of gold uibbrd pens as tiiinisliliig the intensely hard, 11011 cor uullble silvrty points. Purr iridium Is pikrd at f joo per pound, and is so heavy irl.itivrly that this weight of it would be in hulk rather larger than half the size of .1 pound of gold. Yet the o i.illed "iridium" points of a golJ nib are not of pure iridium, but of a natural blend of Iridium and another, r.ue metal, osmlnum. The blend Is found In the form ol scales some llattened, souir of a pin head shape in localities wlieie placer gold Is got, placer gold be lug thr sort that Is obtalurd by washing loose dirt and not by crushing. Of these "iridosmine" scales the pin head type alone are suitable for pen points, and do not exceed a fifth of the entire yearly find, which may average three and a half to four ounces per ton of gold ob tained. Of thr pin head scales 10,000 do not (lire of 100 degrees centigrade this singu lar metal vaporirs and givrs oil a gas which stains thr experimenter's skin a permanent black, and which mav blind him by depositing a Him of the metal on the eyeball. Nhndium is another of the precious met als belonging to what is known as the "platinum" group. It is one of thr hard est metals to melt, and will only yield to the electric arc or the o.vyhydrogrn lime furnace. It can be used, like iridium, for pointing gold pens. Its cost figures out to $425 a pound, but at that it is a trifle lighter than gold when taken bulk tor bulk. The curiously named metal "palladium" stands at f 375 per pound, and In appear ance Is of a silver white to steel gray. One per cent of it makes gold brittle and yellowbh-whlte, 20 per cent turns the compound quite white. The air has no influence whatever upon palladium, nor does it tarnish in sulphuric gases. l;or these reasons it is used, in alloy with gold, for the finely graduated scales of valuable astronomical Instruments. If, Instead of a silver currency, we employed any of these almostly incredibly costly metals supposing we could get enough of them, which would be difficult our ideas of value would undergo a sudden change. An iridium dime, without looking any, dl fferent, would be worth $2.50, and an ' Develop Eagle Creek Water Power. , 1-rom what we deem reliable authority 1 we learn that Edwin l:ish, manager of the ! electric light and gas plants of this city, ; closed a deal yesterd'iy whereby th: com-1 p.iuy has secured control of the old Merritt j water rights, ditches and grounds on F.agle creek. While it Is not 1 probable that anything practical will come J of this move before spring, yet all the pre , limlnaries can be arranged now and the company will be in readiness to act when the time comes.
