Gold Coin Mine Sold.

former owners ol the ptoperty were
Charles Utilise, attet whom Uutkee
station was named, and U.K. and C C.
Nicholas. .Mr. Shoemaker comes from
mining patents, his lather owned and
operated hlg Michigan copper mines. The
Cold Coin ledge Is said to he twelve feet
wide, and i.irrles high values in free gold.
A quantity ot ledge matter, recently mor
tared by hind, Is known to have yellded

sumes metal shape and falls to the roof in
yellow powder. After heavy rains It Is
found lodged in the gutters, and men with
brooms sweep it up carefully and return It
to the assay office. This gold is net profit
to the government, as It really belongs to
nobody, but as it falls on the roof of the
government building, Uncle Sam clearly
has first claim. The mine is guarded
jealously by the federal watchmen, and
no stranger ever steps on that precious
roof. Had boys in the bankers' offices,
knowing of the precious deposit, have
racked their brains for generations to de
vise a way of raiding uncle Sam's mine.
If any windows overlooked the roof, balls
of soft putty tied to threads might lift the
precious dust, but no such opportunity is

seems that Sumpter hasn't 2000 popula
tion. Every one at all informed on the
matter knows that we have from 500 to
1000 more than that. The following cen

25,000 inhabitants, follews: Albany,

La Grande, city, 2091; Oregon City, city,
3944; Pendleton, town, 4406; Salem, city,
4258; The Dalles, city, 3542.
