IT IS aimoniicrd that Senator Stewart
has declared his intention to support Mc
Kinley. 'I he report comes from the re
publican headquarters in New York, and '
the re.vou assigned Is on tlic issue of I
imperialism.
NO railroad has done more Inwards I
advertising the country through which III
passes than the O. R. tV N., and It de-1
serves that Rold medal .vlilch was a few '
days a(0 awarded to it at the Paris ex
position, for having the best grain display i

Sumpter are sufficient to support a camp I
twice the slr of this, and the number of I
producing mines will be doubled within
one yrur. Any cillrn of this town who
has "cold fert" is suffering from a con
stitutional ailment, not a disease superlu-

1 80,000 foreign troops In the country.
IN Till: London Mail of recent date Jul
ian Ralph quotes a "diplomat of high
standing," whose name is not given, who
declares that Russia is vigorously endeav
oring tn secure American support and to
break the harmony existing between the
United States and Great Britan. "Eng
land," siys the diplomat in question,
"lias no first-class power except America
which offers Iter the slightest ground for
hoping a friendly hearing of her case.
The bitter feeling of today will generate
w.ir against her tomorrow. Russia's plan,
which Is encouraged by Austria-Hungary,
France and Germany, Is to strip Great , pENNER & WORTHING I ON

Of course, all European powers want
tn cultivate the friendship of the United
States, in order that they may draw on
our granaries and "smoke houses" In case
' of war. Hut the "diplomat ot high stand-
lug" omitted the chief point nt interest in
i his ghost story, when he failed fo state
how Russia is proceeding in its effort to
break the harmony between England and
i America. Such unsupported talk sounds
I foolish.

ONI: thing sure, Bryan's speech of
acceptance forced imperialism to the front I
as the "paramount" issue of the cam-'
palgn. Democrats of the West are not
yet tired discussing the currency ques-,
Hon and can argue any gold bug on
earth to a stand still but they have
faith in Bryan and are more than anxious '

"Till: National Association of Hobos or
'lourlsts Union" Is one of the latest or
ders founded. Tills is the climax of the
present day mania to organize a society ( "urniS
and collect dues. Ihe second annual ,
meeting Is now being held at Brett, Iowa,
all outside delegates having traveled
thither in bos cars. The Initiation fee is
io cents for a button, but an applicant for
membership must be willing to "pan
handle a dockie" and must prefer to ride
on a brakebeam rather than in a palace
car. 1 hnusands have joined thr union,
and It Is the most democratic society ever
known. One ol the by-laws forbids
giving a brother more than 40 cents at a
time 25 cents for food and is cents for
drink.

Tliosl' Chinese soldiers are rank quit

the grrat revolution that has beenwiought
in the army bv the introduction of modem
guns and the instruction of trained Euro

have doubtless been taught to handle
repeating titles and go through some evo

have not yet learned to light, as their
utter failure to prevent the allied forces
from reaching IVKln demonstrates. The
fact ot the matter seems to be, that the
