Wedtusdav, Ausjust K, iyoo. THE SUMPTER MINER. it SMELTER A SUCCESS. t Pertinent Remarks by a Min ing Man of Experience. surely ought to receive the attention of the proper officials while the weather Is good, as If this road can be any worse next winter than It was Inst, it will be Impossible to Ret over it at all. It is but simple justice to Mr. Lnughlin And his associates ot the Sumpter smelter to state, now that the facts are known, that the recent first test run was a decided success as applied to that class of copper ores, especially as the results were pro duced under many disadvantages. There was and is no intention on the part of the writer to place Mr. Laughlin's efforts In the catagory of "fakes," with which this and all mining camps have been more or less a filleted up to date. In tlte run referred to there were nine tons of cooper ore put through the ftirn see, which produced 3700 pounds of matte, resulting in .1 saving of $33 In gold, 0 ounces In silver and 30 per cent copper per ton of matte. The loss in the slag was only four-tenths of an ounce in silver, trace of gold and no copper. Handicapped as they are, this Is a suc cess so far as It goes, but the management is aware that "one swallow does not make a summer," nor a successful test 011 one particular kind of ore does not constitute successful smelting, as applied , to the ores here. The one thing th.it Is j ana snouiu oe earnestly ueireu is some thing like a continued run upo'i the ores trom the various sections of this camp especially from the Cove as they are produced from the various mines, not any selected special lot. On the other hand, a smelter cannot tun without ore, any more than a sawmill can without logs, and if the cllien and mine owners of this district are one-half as anxious for its ultimate success as they seemed to be to establish the plant, they are in duty bound to see to it that the plant is furnished with ore, that it may be put to the true test. If they possess the confidence they had to begin with, they will do this; if not, the burden of failure will rest equally, if not mure, upon them as witli the smelter. I have been, and am still, of the opin ion that conditions are decidedly against a successful smelter here. Relieving this, my position is that it is a detriment to any camp or mine to have to explain :iwav failures In the shape of Idle mills or smelters, to outsiders who enter the camp. There was one in Baker a few years ago. The ruins are there yet, and in many other camps all over the west, monuments to departed hopes and honest delusions. It Is one thing to howl for a Miielter, but quite another to produce the ore, overcome adverse natural conditions and make it a continued success. Willi the smelter as with mining, there are too J many business men here for the purpose I of receiving the benefits of the industry, I without even a desire to take a chance with a mining enterprise. Capital is loth to enter a camp, whatever its mineral wealth may be, If the support and enter prise of the business cemmunity is with-1 held. If they have not faith enough to ' asume some risk with prospectors, mines or smelters, how can they e;prct others to have? JOHN F. Lt:LAND. Rough and Dangerous Bonanza Road. Much complaint has been heard re cently regarding the condition of the Bonanza road, and many unkind things are said of the road supervisor and other county officials responsible for this state of affairs. Stage drivers report that it Is actually dangerous to drive over this road In some places, and that the stage com pany has had U put a force of men on to work several days to avoid having its stages overturned and making it liable for damage suits. This is a matter that Davldson-Barnctt Nuptials. A. Gi Davidson, the popular young manager of the Capitol hotel barber shop, made a hurried trip to Portland the early part of last week, where on the seventh Instant he was married to Miss Eva Harnett, of that city. Mr. and Mrs. Davidson returned here two days later, where they will hereafter reside. A party of friends of the young couple made their first evening residence here unusually interesting, and at a late hour about twenty-five of his male friends were seen coming down town with the1 new bridegroom in tow. What they did with him must be learned from himself. I Swnlc Line of the World. I For an enjoyable trip east, take the Denver & Rio Gr.iude railroad, Scenic I Line of the world.
