THE SUMPTER MINER vol I. SUMPTER, OREGON, JUNE 27, 1900. NO. 42 $ FUN ON THE FOURTH.1 ARRANGEMENTS COMPLETED' FOR A BIG CELEBRATION. Purses for Horse Racing Materially In creased Rock.Drllling Contest Will be in Hard Granite Wrestling Match for 5500 a Side No Order Ever Issued by the Governor for the Rough Riders to go to Portland. livery arrangement has been completed fur the Fourth of July celebration and there is now no question but what it is going to be a howling success, with big crowds and plenty of enthusiasm. 'I lie grand stand Is finishnd and a first class quarter mile track constructed. The committee having in charge the iiorse racing features, have decided to In crease the purse in the first free for all, quarter mile race, to 5ioo instead ot $60. tis at first anneunced: also in the second race for saddle horses, In whMi event the purse will be $50 instead ot 540. This should increase the interest In the race .and bring out a good string of horses. Paul Polndeter, chairman ot the com mittee in charge of the rock drilling con test, wants Till: MlNhH to state that the rock w ill be hard granite, from the Ibex district. Helta's had 5000 pounds of it hauled to town. Another drawing card is going to be the Orwell-Williams wrestling match which will take place on the grounds In the early evening. Aside from the purse ottered by the committee, these men have put up $500 a side, and the match ian be relied upon to be a hotly contested one. Wil liams threw Orwell at Bonanza some few days since, but those who saw the latter put Brown on his back in Kills Opera house a few weeks ago, know that lie is game and skillful and will make a desperate effort to win back the recently lost laurels. An effort is being made today to make a match bait game with the Law ton team. Negotiations are now in progress over the wires, and at this writing it looks as if it will be a go. In case satisfactory arrangements cannot be consummated, the game will be between two local nines. And It will be a good one, too, for there is sufficient talent In this camp to organize two or three championship clubs. Two petitions have been forwarded to the governor, one signed by members of the troop and the other by citizens gener ally, asking that his order commanding the Smnpter Rough Riders to be in Port land on the l-'ourth be rescinded, and that they be not required to leave here for the encampment at Salem until after that date. A telegram was received a day or two since from the adjutant general stat ing that no such order had been issued. Many merchants have expressed their intention of decorating their business houses with flags and bunting and, of course, the streets will be lined with green trees. The literary program has been com pleted by the appointment of Paul Poln dexter to read the Declaration of Inde pendence. Some weeks since the town council passed an ordinance regulating the ex plosion of fire craCKers on this day, as a precaution against lire, which requlres the esti ill see that MONEY FOR MEDALS. Ice Cream and Berry Festival Begins Tomorrow. The ladies In charge of the work of raising funds for purchasing (lie diamond medals to be awarded to the winners of the rock drilling contest, report tli.it they have met wite the most gratilyiug suc cess in soliciting contributions for the ice cream and berry festival. Thev siy that all the ladies of Sumpter called on have willingly responded and manifest much interest in the movement. Till: MINER is requested by Mrs. Brock, at the head of the committee, to state that if any have been overlooked, it lias been entirely un intentional, that every lady in town is in cluued in the invitation to assist and that donations of cakes w ill be gladly accepted. The medals have been ordered from Chicago, through C. K. Hrodie, who kind ly transacted the business without profit to himself. As soon as they arrive they will be on exhibition at Ills jewelry store, in tlie Opera House block. The Sumpter Lumber company has donated the lumber needed and Bousum V Spauldiug have given all the ice that can be used. The tents are being put up today. They will be tastily decorated with bunting and the national colors. Arbors of evergreens are being constructed in William Still son's yard, in which will be placed rustic seats. The grounds will be lighted at night with Chinese lanterns, making bow ers of beauty, indeed. All tlie pretty girls In town will wait on the tables the three afternoons and even ings during which the festival will be held, beginning tomorrow. Mrs. Griffiths will act as cashier. This will undoubted ly be a great success, socially, and it is hoped financially also, as much money is needed to buy tlie handsome medals which have been ordered. Divorced and Married to Soon. The following from the Baker City Republican relates to a resident of Sump ter: During tlie session of the court this morning, Judge Eakin annulled the mar riage of Mrs. N. Toney and Elmer Toney. The circumstances are as follews: Mrs. Toney had been married and secured a divorce and within six months of the granting of such divorce, married Elmer Toney. When she became appirsed of the Illegality of her second marriage, so tlie evidence discloses, she left the home of Toney and applied to the court for her second marriage to be declared void, Judge J. B. Messick appearing for her in the case. This decision, which is based upon finings of the Supreme court, affects a large number of marriages in Baker City and county. We can call to mind four marriages which are Illegal, and so far as any remedy can be applied, none is ef fective except the parties re-marry after the laps of six months from the granting of divorces. Wind and Hail Storm at Lawton. Word has been received here that a se vere hail and wind storm raged In the vicinity of Lawton Friday night, doing considerable damage. All sorts of stories regarding the size of the hail stones are related and it is said one woman came near being killed by being struck by an extraordinarily large one. The store building of Stewart & Davis was blown out of shaoe, breaking all the windows, and a portion of the Lawton hotel roof was blown off. Tents were torn into shreds and trifling damage was done to several small buildings. Hut this sport be confined to side ot the river. The police v this provision Is enforced. THE LAWS FRACTURED' Highway Robbery, Shooting and Clubbing Scrapes. Tlie law has been Irequentlv fractured during the past few days in and around Sumpter. Friday Grant Thornburg and l I.. Moore were held up a few mlies trout town while on their w.iv home to Granite. Tlie former quit the game twenty dollars j loser and the latter contributed live to the enterprising highwayman, who has not 1 been apprehended. I Saturday evening Steve Barker shot T. . II. Dunpliy In the leg. The row occur red In the Club saloon, over .1 gambling I difficulty. Barker was tried before Justice Steffen yeasterday on tlie charge ot as sault with a dangerous 'weapon. 'He was' acquitted on tlie ground of self defense, It appearing on the preliminary hearing that Dunpliy was beating up tlie accused a plenty, when tlie latter pulled his gun, which was discharged in a scullle which ensued. Barker was then tried on the charge of carrying a concealed weapon, and I was fined twenty-live dollars and costs. Sunday evening Tom Barrett, ;i miner, having taking a drop too much, was ejected from tlie Star hotel, where he was accustomed to stopping, by l!. II. Crom well, the clerk. Shortly afetrwards a man who looked like Barrett, returned to the hotel and pounded Cromwell's head out ot shape with a six shooter. Dr. I'e tree fixed up the head as good as new. With this same face Cromwell testified on the wit ness stand at the hearing before Justice Steffen yesterday that he didn't know who hit him the whole proceeding was veiled in as impenetrable mystery as that legendary encounter in which Billy Patter son was assaulted by some party whose Identity has never yet been revealed. Mr. Barrett was, of course, discharged. He was arrested again, tried and lined fifty dollars and costs for carrying concealed weapons. " Two days before, Marshal Austin seeing that he had been drinking, told him to put his gun away, which lie did, the officer seeing him do it. This being tlie evidence against him, his at torney, A. A. Hammond, advised him to plead guilty. This whole proceeding lias a striking resemblance to a legal force, in which perjury and spite work played star parts. A. B. Winfree, deputy prosecuting attorney, represented the state in both cases. In neither has the fine and costs been paid. Sumpter Free Gold Mining Company. It Is learned that the troubles of the Sumpter Free Gold Mining company are in a fair way to be adjusted at an early day. This is one of the promising properties of the district and a body of good ore was encountered just prior to the shut-down and every one familiar with the mine was surprised when they learned that work had been suspended. This was followed by the filing of a number of liens by miners to secure their wages. THE MINER is informed that the trouble was the result of differences among the officers of the company, who live at Col fax, Washington. It Is stated that the secretary refused to issue any more stock, for what reason It Is not known, and that all operations were suspended until this, difficulty could be, adjusted. The company advertised Its stock In this paper and many orders were received, especially from the e.ist, where the cot red impres sion prevails that a companv which is not alralil to exploit its Uaiins In a homo paper, is a sale loiiceru to deal with. A meeting of directors is being held today. at which time it Is thought an assistant secretary will be elected, who will he hi harmony with tlie majoritv ot the hoard, and operations will soon be resumed. ). N. Doane, School Director. At the election veslerd.iv to choose , successor to School Director W. W. I.ooney, resigned, J. N. Do.ine was eleded, teveiving Hi votes to I. G. Con itell's ss. The latter gentleman was lorced into the race bv his friends against Ills wishes and hlinselt made little eftort to win. At tlie last moment considerable Interest was manifested In tlie election and, unfortunately some animosity was engendered or, more, accurately speak ing, revived. A couple ot years ago two ilnbs, then existing here, got into some sort of a controversy, and the ghost ot this old tight was galvanized into lite, and jected as- an issue into the school election. Another element ol interest in the contest was the prevailing impression that the election of Mr. Doaue meant the retention ol Miss Meyers as principal ol tlie school and that lady's friends pulled off their coats and went in to win. Diseases of the Eye, Ear and Now. Dr. Pilkiugtnn, formerly professor ot diseases of the eye and ear in the medical department of Willamette University, and credited with being one of the most suc cessful operators on the Pacilic coast, has located at Baker City, and will he in Sumpter Wednesday and Thursday, July " 4 and s, and may be tound at the Capital hotel.
