OREGON GOLD MINES
Era of Scientific Development
Has Commenced.
1 After ninny years of experiment, gold
mining In Oregon has settled down to
development on ;i large scale. Unltl ;i
comparatively recent date our progress
was discouraglngly slow. Many factors
contributed tn this condition. It was
loan contended, even by inlniUK engineers
of repute, that the ore bodies of Eastern
Oregon lacked depth, and that, if thev
attained it, they carried no profitable
values. Seven or eight years ago, when
a period of exploitation seemed about to
begin, the linaiici.il crash came and in
vestors were scared away from the I'.icilic
co.ist. Simultaneously, rich discoveries
followed in Colorado, and engrossed the
attention' of mining men, and (lie eastern
Oregon gold belt was left to Itself. '1 he
Investigations of engineers and the devel
opment work of the past four years have
demonstrated beyond doubt that In east
ern Oiegon are the largest .'"id rkliest
gold fields in the world. It has been '
proved that the ore bodies go down, and
that profitable mining can be done at a
depth of 2000 or jsoo feet, and probably
3000 feet. Values increase, not decrease,
with depth. In the big ptoperlles, every
loo feet of sinking adds 30 percent to the 1
value of the rock.

mines will be wealth producers for many

SUMPTER VALLEY RY'S PLANS
Offieals Return From a Trip Over Rout
of the Proposed Extension
In an interview with C. W. Nibley,
vice-president of the Similiter Vallev I
, railway, he is quoted as saying that his
I company had decided to build this year '
IK miles of extension of their main line to I
! the southwest of Sumpter, Into a body of
their own timber situated just this side of ,
Clifford. The extension will leave the I
! main Hue of the road at Sumpter, cross J
the I'owder river and taking advantage 1
of the elevation gained, will go down that
river a short distance to the iionana
canyon, where a good pass has been J
found. j
Mr. Nibley further stated that their
future plans were Indefinite, except that
the company had decided that as fast as ,
the business of tliecountry would warrant
it, whether this year or next year, or in j
five years, they would build through
Prairie City to Canyon City and Hums. 1
Messrs. Jos. A. West, locating engi
neer and Jos. Harton general passenger
agent of the Sumpter Valley Railroad
company returned to Haker City yestcr
from a recouoiteriug trip through the
mountain fastnesses between Sumpter
and Prairie City.
Their trip was In connection with the
extension of the railroad and their work
was not completed on account ol their
(, 1 lack of preparations for the hardships

harder than they expected, owing to the
wild and rugged country and they re
turned to outfit accordingly. The
country through which they traveled
for three or four days would try the
physical endurance of the must accustom
ed mountaineer and some of the gulches
thev got into seemed Impossible to re
trace their steps from. 'I he mountains
were precipitous and the fallen timber
was an awtul obstruction to progress on
foot or on horseback.
Messrs. West and Harton will again
tackle their job in a few days, but next
time w ith ample camp equipments, pack
