The Grizzly group consists of the "Col
orado" and the "Colorado Extension" quartz
mineral claims, situated in the Stimpter Dis
trict of Baker county, Oregon, six miles north
west of the town of Sumpter, forming part of
the rich mineral zone wherein are located
producing mines of fabulous wealth, such as
the "North Pole," "Columbia," "Golconda,"
"Bonanza" etc., etc. Development work on

I World's Supply of Platinum.
I l;or many years between nine-tenths
'and nlncteen-twentleths of the world's
supply of platinum has come from Russia.
I The amount produced has ranged from
, fi.ooo lbs to 8,000 lbs annually. Of late
1 there have been signs that the yield was
I falling off, although the demand has
steadily increased. It is probable tlrt
from one-halt to live-skills of the whole
supply of platinum today Is consumed by
1 the electric lamp makers. Among the
I other uses of the metal are the construe-
tiou of stilts for vitriol, dental work, pro
ducing the photographic paper which
gives us the "platino type," imparting a
silver tint to porcelain, pointing stylo
graphic pens and making non-magnet
watch springs and certain parts of tele
graphic apparatus. Most platinum is al
loyed w Ith two other metals, osmium and
iridium. These latter are separated from
the platinum only with great dilliculty.
When they ate separated the Iridium and
osiduin (combined as "Irldosmine") have
been practically us:lcss except for point

Armory Site and Buildings.
The tirst load of lumber for the armory
of Similiter Cavalry, Troop B, was hauled
from the J. B. Stoddard lumber mills Fri
day to the armory site on Vinson's addi
tion, two blocks south of the west end of
the Granite street bridge. Work will be
gin at once under the superintendence of
Contractor L. N. Crane, who Is one of the

John Day Valley Coal Fields.
On the farm of James Small, down the
valley, is a ledge of bituminous coal, on
which a shaft has been sunk and from
which Mr. Small took out a quantity of
tine soft coal and tested Its burning qual
ities to his satisfaction, even in ordinary
wood-burning stoves. When a railroad
gets through here Mr. Small thinks coal
will be prospected for and found in paying
quantities in many places in this valley.
The Miner opines that Mr. Small lias a
valuable property in tills coal claim alone,
as there will be a demand for soft coal
even before steam engines are rolling
through tliis region of promise. While
there is plenty of forests containing tim
ber for building and fuel, yet the task of
hauling wood from the foothills will cost
more than coal, when the latter is mined

values can be had across Its entire width. '

Cracker Street Grading Finished. 1
The grading of Cracker street was vir
tually completed last Saturday evening,
by Contractor Sullivan, who has done his
work without delay, having been at It
but two weeks and completing what will
be one of the most durable pieces of street ,
grading yet done in the city. j
