Council Finally Passes the Em
pounding Ordinance.
At the meeting of the city council Satur
day evening, the much discussed env
pounding ordinance went to its second
reading and was finally passed, as amend
ed. It Is No. 8, new series.
The electric light ordinance, No. 9, was
also passed. As stated In these columns
last week, by its provisions the city pays
the Sumpter Light and Power company
911.25 each per month for ten arc lights of
2000 candle power, the contract running
two years. Rates for private parties are
not fixed, it having been decided that this
will be equitably adjusted by the compe
tition of other kinds of lights.
Another week was given the committee
on tire and water, in which to report the
ordinance fixing water rates.
On motion of Alderman Stlnson, the
property owners committee was requested
to look after the laying of the sidewalks
on Cracker street, to see that they con
form to the grade.
The Cracker street grade as fixed by
Engineer Penner, was declared official.
Different officials submitted their month
ly reports. That of the city physician
went into details on the sanitary con
dition of the town and was of especial In
terest, In that it reported not a case of
contagious disease within his jurisdiction.
Paul Poindexter was made official cus
todian of the gold medal which this dis
trict won at the Spokane exposition last
fall, for having the best mineral display.
Lightning Prevaricator Does Good Job.
During the thunder storm of yesterday
afternoon, a tree on the main street of the
old town was struck by lightning, very
considerably shattering it, breaking a
number of panes of glass in a house near
the tree, tearing up the sidewalk and play
ing havoc generally with things In that
immediate vicinity. One of the peculiar
freaks of the lightning was when it struck
the tree, it passed up the street, turned
the corner and hit Mrs. Swelgert, who was
bitting in her chair about one hundred
yards from where the lightning struck,
knocking a knife from her hand and ren
dering her insensible for a while. No
other damage was done to any serious ex

Statistics for United States Mint.
Fred A. Wing, United States, assayer
at the government assay office in Seattle,
was in the camp last Thursday and Fri
day gathering statistical matter for the
director of the mint, who is preparing his
annual publication covering, among other
things, the gold and silver production of
the mines, and a general summary of the
output of each district In the United
States. Any one familiar with mining
can readily see and understand the great
difficulties to be encountered In gathering
such statistics direct from producers, and
the impossibility of making sucli accurate.
New Pump Catalogue.
Fraser & Chalmer, the big mining ma
chinery men of Chicago, have issued their
new (number 24) illustrated catalogue of
the Riedler pump, in which is contained
more useful information for the mining
man than could be learned in years of ob
servation. Their address is corner of

O R. ck N., Will Help Mining Convention
At the meeting of the Chamber of Com
merce last night a communication was
read from General Passenger Agent Hurl
burt, of the O. R. & N., in which it was
stated that one fare rates would be made
from all points in Oregon to Baker City
during the Miners convention. Ar
rangements are also being made by the O.
R, & N. for reduced rates from Colorado
and Montana, and passengers on east and
west bound trains will hereafter be al
lowed ten days stop-over in Baker, so as
to have an opportunity to visit the mines
of this section. The committee of citi
zens appointed to raise the $1000 to de
tray the expenses of the convention has,
so far as known, made no move yet, but
a report is expected at the next meeting of
th,e chamber, one week hence. Baker

Forty Stamp Mill for Bonanta-Wcst.
Mr. Warren Cable, superintendent of
the Bonanza-West mine, In Bonanza dis
trict, Is in the city for a brief stay. Mr.
Cable says he is drifting on a vein in
about 900 feet and Is crosscuttiug at every
100 feet. The property Is making such a
fine showing that the owners have tinder
contemplotion the erection of a .jo-stamp
mill on the property In the near future.
Col. Ray and associates, who own the
property, are expected to arrive here in
about 30 days. Baker City Democrat.
Death of Mrs. Mary Jane Ham'lton.
Mary-Jane, wife of J. H. Hamilton, died
at Hamilton, Grant county, Friday, May
4, aged seventy-two years. Deceased
was borne in Decatur county, Indiana,
April, 7, 1822. She was one of a party
that crossed the plains in 1852, and set
tled In Clackamas county, this state,
where she resided until moving with her
husband and family to Grant county in
1872, which has since been Iter home.
She was respected and loved by all who
knew her.
