LAWTON NEWS NOTES.
from The Stan Jar J. 1
A scientific "pocket hunter" is applying
his knowledge to the Ruan gulch section
In Pochontas district. Some rich deposits
will likely be found, for this district is the
scene of the richest placer diggings in the
country.
A team of horses hitched to a drag
scraper fell off the grade at the Red Boy
Monday and rolled down the mountain
side, a distance of a hundred feet or more.
The animals were badly bruised by the
fall, but it Is understood no permanent
injury will result.
W. T. Chalk, chief engineer of the pro
posed Hilgard railroad, was in the city
Tuesday shaking hands with his many
friends here. Mr. Chalk says the HI1
card road Is a sure go, and he is not a
man who distorts facts. If the Hilgard
railroad comes to this basin Lawton will
be the main objective point.
W. H. McMillan, the mining expert,
discovered some valuable property on
Lawton mountain last year and is now
hard at work sinking a shaft on the side
of the ledge In order to prospect the pro
perty thoroughly. He is more than satis
fied with results so far.
Within a few weeks a force of men will
be at work on the O. K., driving a tunnel
toward the heart of Old Spokane. This
news will be hailed with delight by the
merchants of Lawton, for this property is
almost within the city limits.
Another large and well defined ledge
has been discovered recently on the Yel
low Daisy property belonging to Mr. S.
R. Dourty. The ledge pans free gold in
paying quantities on the surface and sure
ly ought to be a "daisy" when depth is
attained.
The Hobson Mercantile company will
occupy their temporary quarters in the
Waugh building opposite the Standard
office next week. As soon as the weather
becomes thoroughly settled this company
will commence the construction of a large
building on their property next door to L.
A. Patterson's business house on Spo-
' kane avenue.
Mr. James A. Howard, secretary of the
I Lawton townsite company, has sold to
W. li. Hurd the fractional quartz mining
claim. This fraction joins the Chelan,
the property of Mr. Hurd, on the east.
Mr. Hurd has sold to the Concord Gold
Mining company that portion of the
Chelan quartz mining claim lying north
of the north fork of Congo creek, and
east of the center line of the said Chelan
quartz claim. The property purchased
joins the Concord on the south.
