I ntered at Ihr nlofftce In Sumpter, Oregon, for
transmission through Ihr malls as second class
matter.
POPULATION OF SUMPTER 4,500.
AND now it is announced th.it General
Miles Is also a presidential Barkis they
all are.
Till: Sumpter district is already full of
prospectors, many of whom are men of
experience from Colorado and Montana.
Some finds will be made this season that
will startle the world.
IN another column are some figures per
taining to the receipts and expenditures of
this town since its incorporation, two
years ago. I lie history ui the tamp Is
epitomized In the fact that nearly one
third of the entire revenue collected was
paid Into the treasury last month. And
there has as yet been no property tax
collected.
SPEAKING of the probabilities of the
passage of the Puerto Rlcan bill, the re
publican "whip," V. P. Long, says:
"There Is too much doubt to venture a
prediction. The situation is Summed up
thus: The republican majority in the
house is iu; there are 8 republicans
against the bill; that leaves a majority of
only j. It Is a narrow margin." Repre
sentative Underwood, speaking for the
democrats, says: "We will have every
man present except two; they are in bed.
There will he no democratic votes for the
bill. This will make the vote very close,
and we hope to prevent a concurrence."
SOME whimpering Imbecile, inoculated
with the virus of hatred, wrote an edi
torial in the Raker City Republican about
the democratic convention, which the
Democrat ot that city promptly printed,
evidently judging it to be good campaign
literature tor its side of the political battle
just opening. In fact, this was the first '
gun tired in the light, which exploded and !
did more damage to friends than foes )
the mission of all fool friends, In which ,
class the Republican stands at the head.
The Idea of trying to ring In General
Warren as an ally ot the democratic party ,
Is enough to make even a proof reader
laugh with derision. !
Till: MINER, in Its issue of November '
N, closed an editorial comment on the
marriage ol Admiral Dewey with these
werds:
"Rut with a woman In the case; one,
too, in the attractive prime of life, with an
ample lot tunc at her disposal, accustomed
and wedded to Washington social life, an '
acknowledged radiant ornament, withal,
in that generally reputed charmed circle,
a new and potent influence is Introduced
Into affairs political. If the nomination is
offered Dewey, the madam must neces
sarily be consulted, and if the peerless
sea captain shows any inclination to with
hold from her the proud social triumphs
which she can win as 'the first lady of
the kind, ' he will stir up a domestic con
Ilk t that will force the affair at Manila
bay to sink into Insignificance, in compar
ison, and from which he will not emerge
with one hundredth part the eclat. The
future Mrs. Dewey is a political factor
that cannot be ignored keep your eye on
her, and give the Admiral a rest."
This is a case of "I told you so," with
no credit claimed for a power to divine the
future. It was merely predicting a
natural result; what the history of the
race teaches would occur under given
circumstances. But It is a fact to be re
gretted that so admirable a man, so splen
did a lighter should be placed in the
absurd position he now occupies, through
the intrigues of unscrupulous politicians
and the social ambitions of a woman.
He has finally confessed that he Is a
i democrat, which confession no one be
lieveshe has no politics, he is a fighting
1 sailor and the most skillful one in the
world today. As a politician he cuts a
, ridiculous figure, exciting the sympathy
of his Intelligent admirers. He should
shut his eyes to the accidental success of
Generals Taylor and Harrison the first
and contemplate the fate of Hancock and
Greeley.
Leaders of the gold wing of the old
democracy, Whitney, Gorman, Hill and
others are the conspirators against his
eternal renown and self respect, whose
vain purpose Is to defeat Rryan.
