TALK OF THE TOWN.
Mrs. John Hagen went to Maker City
today.
Attorney Starr is in Pendleton on legal
business.
Mrs. Hodkey is building a neat cottage
on Warren Heights.
Dr. (Jreenlec, dentist, is located over
the Similiter Drug company store.
S. I.. Lipscomb, a United States mail
contractor, registered at the Capital last
S.iturday from Kansas City, Missouri.
J. I). Stoddard has commenced the erec
tion of a two story residence, 24x60 feet,
facing Granite street, near the school
house.
Deputy County Assessor George W.
lett began the work of assessing the
property holders of Sumpter Monday
morning.
Mrs. J. N. Hoffman, at the tent milli
neryslote,shovs all the latest eastern hats
and has received a line line of shirt waists
and skirts.
W. D. Woodford, a miner, fell down a
steep Incline several miles from Sumpter
last week, and broke his firm, which w.is
set by Dr. Ilrock.
C. I:. I.oomls, special agent of the
United Slates laud ollice, is again in the
district and will remain in and about
Sumpter for an Indefinite timc.on business
connected with the department.
George K. liallock, of Seattle, formerly
partner of I:. J. Dwyer at Republic, Is In
town looking for a mining property for a
syndicate of Seattle capitalists, and I:. J.
will come pretty near finding it for them.
II. C. Dlttrich, an architect from Port
land, arrived here Monday, with a view of
remaining If the situation warrants it,
which Is likely; as building operations are
now taking 011 new life with the opening
of spring.
Major John M. Ihirke, one of the dele
gates to the county democratic convention
held here S.iturday, has prolonged his
visit into a stay of several days, being
engaged in the transaction of an import
ant mining deal.
It. J. Watson returned some days since
from California, where he has spent the
winter. He says many mining men from
that state have heard of the Sumpter gold
fields and will come up this season to in
vestigate and Invest.
David Wilson spent several days in
town this week. He e.Npressed some dis
satisfaction with the treatment received
trom some unnamed parties, and says he
will not begin building operations until he
gels these diflereuces adjusted.
Yesterday was pay day for the Sumpter
I nmber company. There was paid out in
wages more than fjioo, and on contract
work another 5 1000. The mill Is tunning
full capacity, w itli plenty of logs on hand
and an iucteasiug demand foritsptoducts.
James Plsk, who has been dangerously
ill witli pneumonia at his mother's resi
dence on South Mill street for some e tlm
past, Is now much improved and Dr.
Hrock, his physician, thinks the prospects
for his rapid recovery are very favorable.
W. H. W. Hamilton, a prominent min
ing engineer, now superintendent of the
Don Juan mine at Gelser, came down on
business Monday. His expert work in
the examination of several of the best
mines of the district is making an enviable
reputation for Mr. Hamilton.
George M. Welgel, a large property
owner here, former owner of the bakery
now conducted by McCollum & Arm
strong, has returned from Vancouver,
Washington, where he spent the winter.
The usual expression of surpiise at the
growth of Sumpter Is his also.
A. J. Kline and A. T. Vedder, of Pat
tersonville, New York, arrived here Sun
day, expecting to remain permanently
and engage In business after looking over
the field for a few days. The former Is a
brother-in-law of l:. W. Sterling of the
Sumpter Porwardlng company.
Nolle to Creditors.
All accounts and notes due me, not
satisfactorily settled by May 1, 1000, will
be placed in the hands of an attorney and
Costs added.
