DEMOCRATIC POLITICS.
Delegates Elected to the Coun
ty Convention.
At the democratic primaries Saturday
afternoon the following delegate, were
elected to the county convention to he held
here on the seventh Instant: W. H.
Gleason, A. I'. Jones, J. Is. Shelton, W.
W. Felix, C. M. Donaldson, J.F. Cupid,
A. W. Hills, W. W. I.ooney, George
Maker, C. II. McColloch and J. II. Hob
bins. The vote of the winners ran from
26 to 46; so it svill be seen that the con
test was not a very spirited one.
Monday evening a meeting was held to
discuss plans for entertaining the dele
gates and visitors wiio will be In attend
ance on the convention. This was a citi
zen's affair, politics not being a factor.
These live names were added to the re
ception cemmittee: M. I:. Swan, Willi.im
Stinson, C. C. Basclie, (i. W. Jett and
Sam Stolt, making that body forty strong,
every member of which guarantees to be
on his feet when the last delegate is put
to bed, or gently rolled under the twenty
one table.
It was decided to meet the visitors at
the tr.ilu and escort them around town
with a hand; in procession, il the streets

All talk about candidates is in subdued
whispers In fact, thereare no candidates,
only patriots willing to serve their country
and scrap for the opportunity.
Whatever may be the political outcome
of the convention, the visitors must leave

dially received and hospitably entertained.

of substantial growth."
FUh Strike in the Bonanza.
Mr. Jackson, superintendent of the
Hoii.ina mine, arrived hi this city this
morning from that property. He says
that yesterday they came in contact with
the rich ledge they have been looking tor
torssome time. He brought some of the
ore with him, and upon having It assayed
found it worth $240 to the ton. Mr. Jack
son was greatly excited over the strike,
and he has reason to be. The bonanza is
one of the oldest paying properties in that
district, and has a large amount of ore on
the dump. Baker City Republican.
Captain Wood Goei Back to Hi Boat.
Captain '.. C. Wood, father of Harley
Wood, after spending the winter In Simili
ter, has returned to his first love skipper
of a steamer plying on the Columbia and
Willamette rivers. The Captain had
thought of retiring from the business, but
the line spring weather lured him away.
He left here Thursday for Portland, his
headquarters.
Twenty-Three Liquor Licenses Granted.
Twenty-three liquor, two music hall and
one variety theatre licenses were granted
by the city council Saturday evening, net
ting the city f 2375, for the quarter. The
marshal was instructed to order the pro
prietor of the market on Sumpter street to
remodel the front of his building, so as to
conform to the provisions of the ordinance
regulating such matters. The city engin
eer was Instructed to put in his spare time
establishing the grade on Granite, east of
Mill; to do this odd job while he Is rest
ing, as It were. 'I he marshal was In
structed to collect the dog tax.
Ex-Attorney General of Idaho in Sumpter.
Ex-Attorney General Bierbower, of
Idaho, was in Sumpter Saturday and Sun
day, calling 011 his old friend, Dr. Brock.
He Is now located at Grangeville and was
on his svny to Boise, to attend a session
of the Supreme court. He says helms
heard much of Sumpter ol late and was
prepared to see a live camp, but that It
far exceeds his expectations and that Is
the experience of all who come here and
see for themselves.
GRIZZLY GOLD MINING COMPANY
Will Work the Colorado and Colorado
Extension.
Some months since the Grizzly Gold
Mining company svas Incorporated to work
the Grizzly group, an extension of the
Ibex, but before organization was per
fected the property was sold. It has since
been Incorporated under the name of the
Gold Bug.
The Grizzly company has recenty ac
quired another property, consisting of the
Colorado and Colorado Extension, and its
life will be prolonged into what bids fair
to be a useful and valuable one.
Monday the following new board of
directors was elected: J. J. Penhale, Al
bert Gelse, Dr. E. H. Parker, of Port
land, Harry Beckwlth, It. C. Pentland,
Eugene Sperry and C. D. Ilcaly. Officers
elected are: J. J. Penhale, president; Al
bert Gelse, vice-president; It. C. Pent-
land, secretary, and Eugene Sperry, treas-'
urcr. .
These claims adjoin the Maiden's
Dream. They have been extensively
prospected, but not yet developed to the
extent of being mines. Every Indication,
however, Is that they will be. Values are
obtained everywhere on the surface and
Increase where a tunnel or a shaft has
been sunk. In several places a depth of
thirty feet has been reached.
