Marvelous Mineral Wealth, Grazing, Ag ricultural and Timber Lands. Eastern Oregon is a region of great and largely undeveloped resources. In It Is a large aggregate area of arid and desert lands, but there Is enough that is good for something to support in abundance twice the present population of the whole state. It contains fertile agricultural lands, fruit lands, grazing lands, broad prairies, vast bodies of timber, manifold streams and mines of almost unimagin able riches. In grain, livestock, wool and gold, the productive districts of Eastern Oregon and they are large and numer ouscan scarcely be excelled for natural wealth anywhere on the continent. The proposed new railroad will, for the most part, run through agricultural and stock raising districts, though it will tap timber belts and may strike through min eral districts, too. It will bring to the Columbia river, which means to Portland, vast quantities of grain, stock and other products. Along the line of Its construc tion the country will be settled and towns will spring up, making an increased de mand for merchandise in this metropolis. Other local roads are also projected in Eastern Oregon, Indicating, in connection with other enterprises, the great and rapid development of that region. The mineral discoveries and developments are the greatest attraction, but Eastern Oregon has even greater and but little developed resources than those. In spite of its ex tensive wastes, Eastern Oregon, taken as a; whole, is a goodly land anJ no. equal number of people in any one locality or state or region are more prosperous, or h'ave brighter prospects than Its inhab itants. J. B. Wager in Portland Tele gram. , Bunch of Railroad Rumors. "I was told by those who seem to know that the agents of the, O,, R. & N.-Co. are in the country quietly obtaining pos session of certain lands in the vicinity of Prairie City, and that the Columbia Southern railway, a branch of the O. R. & N., running south from Biggs to Prine ' ville, will be extended to the Upper John Day country, probably Into Prairie City, land thence on to Vale, on the Snake river, to a junction with the Short Line. It is said that this will be used as the main 'continental road, saving a good many miles in distance between Portland and Chicago, and avoiding the heavy grades I of the Blue mountains. Others think the new road may be in the interest of the C, I B. & Q., which is known to be seeking an outlet that wav from its Black Hills ' line to Portland.-Rev. C. H. Lake. 1 Change of Train Time Tomorrow. The MINER Is In receipt of the new time schedule which takes effect Thursday, Alarcli 15, on the Sumpter Valley railway, , making a material change iu the arrival ' and departure of the trains. Numbers 2 and 4, passenger trains; leave here at 9:55 , a. m. and 4:2$ p. m. respectively, arriving In Baker City at 11:2s a. m. and 6:00 p. in. Leaving the latter place, trains nuiu 1 bers 1 and 3 starts at 8 a. in. and 2:30 p. I in., reaching Sumpter at 9:45 a. in. and 1 4:15 p. m. The logging train service as a I passenger accommodation is stated to be a thing of the past, confining such travel ' to the regular passenger trains and to one ' of which at least, a parlor car Is to be at ' tached. And thus the former logging road is being transformed into the real thing, If Mr. Barton could consistently shorten I up the running time a little more he would 1 add yet another feather to his cap. - 1 Voters Attention. The voters of the North and South Sumpter precincts can now register at the city hall, E. L. Manning, city recorder, having received the registration books from the county clerk for that purpose. .Superior job printing at this olKeTTSRW H.
