Wednesday, March 14, 1900. THE SUMPTER MINER. 11 r ADVICE, PROSPECTORS. Given Without Charge by One of Experience. There Is a simple rule that a large class of mine owners and prospectors should be impressed with every day in the week, if they ever expect to develop or dispose of their property, and it Is this: Terms can often be modified, but misrepresentation can not be explained away, whether In tentional or otherwise. In every camp there are scores of men who return home utterlv disappointed and disgusted because they have been deceived in the value and quantity of ore in a mine or prospect. There Is a class of "alfalfa" prospec tors who are foolish enough to believe that the other fellow does not know anything. A man who examines property for him self or others Is as anxious to find a prop erty as reported as the owner Is to sell or work it. It is most a certainty that where a property comes up to the description or proves a trifle better, that -a sale will be effected, provided the mine is not over loded as to price. Few seem to realize how few prospects will stand the test of inspection, or what It costs to travel and test a mine as it should be, and even after this is done it requires' a man of unusual ability and in fluence to obtain capital. For one who has lived among the most intelligent class of prospectors, it is almost impossible to conceive why a man will work a prospect a long while and not know what his ore runs or what it will average, and yet the woods are full of this type of prospectors. Even old prospectors know that there is a strong tendency for men to deceive them selves as to ore values and there is a con tinual struggle to resist self deception as to averagealuec. This often originates from the fact that the wish was father to the thought. It is strange that many owners of pros pects will (nslst upon acting as if the man who comes to inspect a mine doesn't know much. The sooner this class of claim owners get over this delusion, the more work will be done all over the camp. They should remember that it is hard and often costly work to inspect mines well and consummate sales. This truth will be more evident to many men If they once start out to secure property and land a deal. J. F. L. SUMPTER A GREAT CAMP. Baker City Citizen Amaud at Its Growth in one Year. Mr. Herman Bamberger, senior member of the mercantile firm of Bamberger & Tichner, proprietors of the White House, in this city, a pioneer resident of Baker county and one who has been a conspic uous figure in advancing the business and social growth of Baker City, spent last Sunday and a part of Monday at Sumpter. Mr. Bamberger's visit was to see for himself if all the good things said of Baker county's prosperous and booming mining camp were true, and he returned home greatly pleased and very enthu siastic over what he saw. "The town has grown amazingly since my former visit one year ago," said Mr. Bamberger at the White House yesterday, "and the camp is certainly a permanent one. Brick and frame buildings are being erected as fast as material can be supplied and the rents asked and received are staggering, but when one looks around and sees the business that is done, it is no wonder that people are ready to pay almost any price to get a business loca tion. "A very notable characteristic of the people of Sumpter fs the unity that pre vails. Every man is shoulder to shoulder with his neighbor in praising the town and in advancing every enterprise that will add a single dollar to the prosperity of the place. The good Impression this makes upon strangers works wonders and investors are not slow to take hold where every one assists him In his under takings." Mr. Bamberger says the town was con siderably excited on Sunday over a re ported wonderful rich free-gold strike made on a location by the Griflin Bros., about one mile north of .Sumpter. Samples of the ore brought into camp showed the glittering of gold. Another discovery, also close to the town, made a few days ago by n couple of tenderfeet from Missouri, was the topic of much conversation. In fact, Mr. Bam berger says reports of rich strikes are heard everywhere one goes and one can not but help but be convinced that Sump ter camp In the richest on the globe. Baker City Democrat. David Wilton Arrives In Sumpter. David Wilson returned to town today, after an absence of two weeks. Regard ing the frame hotel which he announced when last here that he would build on south Mill street, he says It will undoubt edly be built, but possibly with some slight change in the plans. Tills building is to be hurried to an early completion to accomodate the ever increasing rush of travelers to this camp. The large brick hotel in the same vicinity, of which much has been said, will be finished some time in September. Death From Heart Failure. L. R. Mayne, who came here from Salt Lake about ten days ago, to secure min ing property upon which to organize a company, was taken suddenly ill at his rooms In the Healy building Friday of last week, and after the short time of about forty eight hours expired, from what was pronounced heart disease by the physici ans. His remains were taken in charge by Case & Co., and his wife telegraphed to in Salt Lake, as well as a brother in Arizona. Upon advices received from them, the body was embalmed and ship ped to his home for burial. Choice business and residence property in all parts of the city See D.
